With Torii Hunter Jr. (Prosper, Texas/Prosper) off the board after his commitment to Notre Dame on Sunday, Texas continued its pursuit of a third receiver for its 2013 recruiting class with another call to one of the nation’s top uncommitted wideouts.
ESPN 150 prospect Laquon Treadwell (Crete, Ill./Crete-Monee) spoke with Longhorns receivers coach Darrell Wyatt on Sunday night.
The conversation was the second Treadwell has had with Texas since first hearing from their staff last Wednesday. Treadwell said the talk went well and he enjoyed getting to know Wyatt.
“He’s a great guy, real laid-back guy,” Treadwell said. “He doesn’t really try to tell you too much that’s not true or anything. He’s good. He was asking about me and my recruiting and my family.”
The 6-foot-3, 195-pound receiver thought there was a chance he would pick up an offer from UT following last week’s initial contact. That didn’t happen on Sunday.
“That’s a possibility once we get more comfortable and everything and we talk more and get a better relationship,” he said.
Treadwell said he has “a little interest” in making an official visit to Austin this fall, but it doesn’t hurt the Longhorns’ chances that the four-star prospect has already seen Texas play this season.
He took an official visit to Ole Miss for the weekend of the Texas game and came away impressed with UT’s 66-31 blowout victory and its offense's season-high 326 passing yards.
“They have a great offense,” he said. “They give their playmakers a chance to make a play on the ball and everything. That’s one thing I noticed. ... Just knowing they throw to each receiver on the field, that’s the kind of offense I want to play in.”
Treadwell said he didn’t speak with any Texas coaches during his time in Oxford, Miss., so he was pleasantly surprised to hear from the staff last week. He didn’t think the Longhorns did much recruiting outside of their home state.
Though Treadwell has long been considered a Michigan lean, he said his recruitment is currently wide open. He’s interested in taking visits to Oklahoma for the Notre Dame game on Oct. 27 and a return trip to Ole Miss for its Oct. 13 game against Auburn. He’s also interested in seeing Oklahoma State and is expected to take an unofficial visit to Michigan this season.
Thus far, the No. 4-ranked receiver recruit hasn’t targeted a Texas home game he’d consider attending. If the Longhorns do offer and continue to pursue Treadwell, a visit could be possible. But first, he wants more information about the Texas staff.
“I’m not really sure as of right now,” he said. “It’s kind of early. We’ve just got to see how it goes.”
The visits Treadwell takes this fall will be crucial for reaching a decision. He’s not quite sure when he’ll be ready to announce his pledge, but it won’t happen until he sees more college campuses.
The key, he said, is finding a school with good coaches and an impressive recruiting class. If he finds what he’s looking for during a visit, he won’t hesitate to make his choice.
“If it happens early, it’s all good because it’ll be when I find a school I like,” Treadwell said. “If it happens any time before the Under Armour game, it’ll be because I liked a school that much on the visit I went to. It just depends on how my visits go.”
