AUSTIN, Texas – A look at the positives and negatives from Texas’ 37-17 win over Wyoming:
Turnover battle: Texas is now 16-0 when it wins the turnover battle over the past three seasons. The Longhorns defense secured two interceptions. Those picks led to touchdown drives of 44 and 43 yards. Texas did turn the ball over when quarterback David Ash mishandled a snap at the UT 30-yard line. But the Texas defense was able to snuff out a fourth-down conversion inside the 10 to get the ball back.
Running game: Joe Bergeron ran for 110 yards. Malcolm Brown ran for 105 yards. So Texas met its goal of getting both sophomores to 100 yards. And that the running backs did it on 15 and 14 carries, respectively, was a bonus for the Longhorns. Texas would have liked to incorporate freshman Johnathan Gray some more into the mix -- he only had four carries -- and will work to do that against New Mexico.
Third-down defense: The Texas defense allowed 345 yards. But when it came to third downs, the much-hyped group came though. Texas allowed Wyoming only one third-down conversion in 11 tries. The Cowboys were two of three on fourth down conversions.
Slow start: Texas had been preaching that it wanted to start fast, and it did anything but. The Longhorns went three and out on the first drive. Meanwhile Wyoming had 178 yards in the first quarter and led 9-7 when that 15 minutes was over.
Big plays: Texas was one of the top teams in the nation when it came to not allowing passes of more than 25 yards last season. In fact through the first 10 games in 2011, the Longhorns didn’t give one up. They gave up an 82-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter against Wyoming. And gave up another 25-yard pass to Dominic Rufran.
Kicking game: The Longhorns were forced to use true freshman kicker Nick Jordan due to an injury to Anthony Fera. Jordan missed field goal attempts of 46 and 44 yards. He also had a point-after attempt blocked.
