HornsNation is analyzing each of the scholarship players currently on the Texas roster. (The bulk of the 2012 class is not currently on the roster.) We will look at the player’s past contributions, what he might do for Texas this year and the future impact he could have on the program. Starting with No. 1 Mike Davis we will go through the roster numerically before ending with No. 99 Desmond Jackson.
Offensive line, 6-5, 260, freshman
Impact so far
Hutchins redshirted his first season and tried to get into the weight room and bulk up. At 260 pounds, he is not going to be an effective lineman for Texas and needs to put on at least 40 more pounds to have a realistic shot at playing in the future.
Impact in 2012
Texas is searching for backups but Hutchins does not appear ready to assume one of those roles as of yet. He needs to get bigger and stronger in order to contend for playing time. It is unlikely that he will see much action in 2012.
Impact in 2013 and beyond
Hutchins’ best-case scenario is becoming a reliable backup and biding his time to crack the starting lineup. The starting offensive line is set for 2012 and 2013. Texas also has some promising young players, so if Hutchins does not work himself into some quality backup time by his junior season, he is not likely to get much time as a senior.
