WR Massington gets Bama offer

5/4/2012

Who needs breakfast when you can wake up to a call from Nick Saban?

Four-star wide receiver Eldridge Massington (Mesquite, Texas/West Mesquite) woke up and arrived to his high school campus Wednesday morning to a phone call from the revered Alabama head coach, and he ended the conversation with a scholarship offer.

Massington, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound receiver, picked up his 24th, and arguably, his biggest offer. He’s being recruited by receivers coach Mike Groh.

“It feels real good, and I’m excited,” Massington said. “I mean, they won the national championship.”

Despite being only ranked No. 20 among all receivers nationally, Massington has always considered himself an elite receiver. The offer from the Crimson Tide helps to solidify his argument. Massington caught 41 passes for 667 yards and six touchdowns during his junior season.

His 2011 numbers are even more impressive when it’s factored in that he didn’t play in West Mesquite’s final three games because of turf toe and also didn’t catch a pass in the first game of the year. West Mesquite introduced a freshman quarterback to the offense. Massington was one of the district’s leading receivers in only six games of production.

“You look at their past receivers. They’re all cold,” Massington said. “Look at what Julio Jones is doing now in the league. I want to show that I can be that kind of receiver.”

Alabama, with the offer, sees his potential. The Tide coaches were in attendance at a West Mesquite practice earlier this week, and Massington knew it was time to shine when the spotlight was on.

“They were reminded me who they had and what they did,” Massington said. “Coach Groh came wearing his championship ring.”

Alabama was an offer Massington hoped for, but he added that he won’t make any on-the-spot decisions. He said he will take his time and discuss all options with his family. Massington currently is focused on competing in the Texas Class 4A state track and field meet, as he has qualified in the 100-meter dash.

Massington, along with Alabama, also has offers from Oklahoma State, Michigan, UCLA, TCU, Washington State and a host of other schools.
