The dominoes for the 2014 class of Texas defensive backs have begun to fall. Perhaps the biggest so far came Monday, when Lancaster (Texas) athlete Nick Harvey surprised many by giving his pledge to Texas A&M.
When it comes to scholarship offers, Nick Watkins is right up there with the best of the best. The Dallas Bishop Dunne cornerback holds offers from Alabama, Texas, LSU, Texas A&M, Georgia, Oklahoma, Notre Dame and a handful of other big-time programs.
Now that Bishop Dunne’s season is over, he’s ready to start focusing on his recruitment. But he’s in no hurry to end this process.
HornsNation: How are you feeling about the recruiting process right now? Do you like where you’re at so far?
Nick Watkins: We’ll see what happens in the springtime. I really do not know what’s going to happen. I’ve still been talking to all the schools.
HN: Who are the schools that have kept in contact with you most this fall?
Watkins: I really can't say. I call all of them, and most of them answer. I can’t just point one out.
Watkins: I pay attention to it, but I’m not going to let it affect my decision. All of them are great DBs. You can’t forget Tony Brown out of Beaumont Ozen and the guy from Arlington, Ed Paris. It’s a great group and everybody has a great skill set for the next level.
HN: You went to three games this year on unofficial visits: Michigan-Alabama, Notre Dame-Oklahoma and Texas-Baylor. What’d you think of the UT game?
Watkins: It was a shootout. Both teams were putting points on the board. It was a good game, though.
HN: Was there any one game that you enjoyed most of all, or any one of those six schools that you like the most?
Watkins: All the games I went to, I had offers from both teams. I really haven’t thought about it. I really haven’t. I’m probably not going to make a top list til next year around August. Everybody is about even.
HN: Now that your season is over, the recruiting process really fires up. Are you excited about that? Do you feel some pressure about it?
Watkins: I’m not feeling any pressure. I’m just taking it slow and taking it all in.
