Add linebacker Josh Walker (Gilmer, Texas/Gilmer) to the list of 2014 recruits with a Texas offer.
Walker, who is 6-foot-1, 220 pounds, tells HornsNation he was offered about six weeks ago. Longhorns offensive line coach Stacey Searels has kept in close contact with the Gilmer coaching staff.
“One evening after practice my coach told me,” he said. “I was excited that I got it. I just have to keep working because not a lot of people get this opportunity.”
Walker actually grew up an Oklahoma fan because it was who his father rooted for and also because he had a cousin, running back Justin Johnson, play for the Sooners. Johnson was ranked as the No. 125 prospect in the 2008 ESPN 150. He lasted just one season at OU before transferring to Abilene Christian.
The offer from Texas, however, was one Walker was hoping to get, and the Longhorns should be a player in his recruitment for the long haul.
“I like their coaches,” he said. “I felt at home when I went down there to visit for the spring game. I felt comfortable down there. I liked the environment.”
Walker is still trying to get familiar with Texas’ coaching staff but he was able to get to know Searels and defensive coordinator Manny Diaz a bit better at the spring game, particularly Diaz.
“When I talked with him he was very straight to the point,” Walker said. “He explained everything down to the 'T.' I didn’t have to think about it. I felt like I was talking to one of my coaches here at Gilmer.”
Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Texas Tech have also offered Walker. The Aggies’ move to the SEC does intrigue Walker.
He imagines that the reason schools are going after him has to do with his aggressiveness.
“That’s probably the No. 1 thing,” he said. “I don’t let people block me. My pass rush too.”
Those traits have some that have seen him play comparing him to former Aggie Von Miller, now with the Denver Broncos. Walker has actually played some defensive end but he is used strictly at linebacker on defense.
His athleticism is used in a multitude of ways on offense, though. He said he has 41 carries for 237 yards and 4 touchdowns, and also 11 catches for 131 yards and 4 scores this season.
