Campus location: Stillwater, Okla.
Conference: Big 12
Record vs. Texas: 4-22
Last game: The Cowboys got the win over a lowly Louisiana-Lafayette team but suffered the loss of quarterback Wes Lunt. The freshman was named the starter in the spring and as such took the majority of the snaps in the preseason. Lunt had set a Big 12 freshman record of 436 passing yards against Arizona the previous week. His status for the Texas game remains unclear. Another freshman, J.W. Walsh, finished out the Lafayette game for the Cowboys.
Last meeting with Texas: Two turnovers and two big plays allowed were the difference for the Longhorns against OSU in 2011. Quarterback David Ash threw two picks, one of which led to a Cowboys score. In addition, OSU had a 74-yard touchdown run by Jeremy Smith and a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the 38-26 win.
Key player: Oklahoma State running back Joseph Randle could have the offense placed on his shoulders if Lunt is unable to go. The junior is capable. He leads the conference in rushing with 112 yards per game and averages 6.7 yards per carry. Randle is a constant big-play threat. Texas' M.O. is always to stop the run first and then go after the quarterback. If the Longhorns cannot stop Randle, the Cowboys will be able to operate the offense they want.
Why they might win: Oklahoma State is all about the big play. The offense is predicated on it. And Texas has not exactly been stalwart in its defense of big plays this season. The Longhorns have given up touchdown passes of 82 and 75 yards. In addition, Texas has allowed a 100-yard kickoff return and a 48-yard touchdown run.
Why they might lose: The Cowboys have played one halfway decent team, Arizona, and gave up 59 points. While in year’s past, OSU had the offensive weapons to outscore people, this year they are without a standout receiver and veteran quarterback. Couple that with a defense that gave up 501 yards to Arizona and a team that committed 15 penalties, and it could spell trouble for the Cowboys.
