Tackle Nickelson enjoys unofficial visit

Class of 2013 offensive tackle Tristan Nickelson (League City, Texas/Clear Falls) took an unofficial visit to Texas for the Texas Tech game and came away thoroughly impressed.

“Out of the schools that I’ve gone to, Texas is the top,” Nickelson said. “I just thought they had the top facilities. I thought the way the coaching staff interacted with the players was great. I got to meet with Johnathan Gray and take a picture with him. It was awesome.”

It was Nickelson’s first Texas game this season. He attended Texas A&M’s game against Baylor on Oct. 15 and will take unofficial visits to Arkansas (Nov. 12) and Auburn (Nov. 26). During the summer Nickelson (6-foot-8, 285 pounds), who holds an Arkansas offer, camped at Virginia. On the way up he stopped by Virginia Tech, and on the way home he visited Auburn.

That brief visit to Auburn came up in conversation with Texas offensive line coach Stacy Searels before the game. Searels was a lineman for the Tigers, and blocked for Bo Jackson.

“My dad, Ron Nickelson, who played at TCU, his strength and conditioning coach there [Kevin Yoxall] is the strength coach at Auburn now. So it was cool to get the connection with Coach Searels.

“Coach Searels met me in the player’s lounge where we had breakfast and he walked up to me and said ‘Dang, you are huge.’ ”

Nickelson also had a conversation with Texas’ co-offensive coordinator Major Applewhite, who is his area recruiter.

“I also got to see how they coach the offensive line and how they approach warm-ups,” Nickelson said. “I toured the facilities, the weight room, the player's lounge and portions of the locker room, too.”

Things will only continue to heat up for Nickelson. He has been selected to participate in the National Combine in San Antonio and has already been invited to Junior Days at Texas, Michigan, Auburn, Texas A&M, Virginia Tech, Clemson, West Virginia, Purdue, Georgia and Florida.
