Texas interested in 2012 QB Childress

10/26/2011

AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Bryan Harsin is scheduled to make a phone call today to Houston Kinkaid coach Stephen Hill to discuss, for the second time, quarterback Ford Childress.

Childress, son of five-time NFL Pro Bowl defensive tackle Ray Childress, is committed to West Virginia. The four-star prospect is rated as the No. 9 quarterback in 2012 and the No. 142 overall recruit in 2012 by ESPNU.

Hill said that Harsin called a few weeks ago and that the two spoke for 20 minutes.

“They were interested in him and getting some more film on him, and just wanting my overall take on Ford and how committed he was to West Virginia,” Childress said.

Hill believes that Childress is still firmly committed to the Mountaineers and that rumors of WVU joining the Big 12 are helping its case.

“I think it helps. His family was a little uneasy at the direction of the Big East and what was going to happen there,” Hill said. “Obviously, with them coming to the Big 12 and being able to play in-state with TCU, Texas and Baylor. Oklahoma State is a hop, skip and a jump away.”

Hill said that Childress’ biggest concern with the Longhorns is their youth at the position.

“He feels like he can compete,” Hill said. “But the thing that is holding him back a little bit is the fact that they have two really, really good young quarterbacks that are already there and another high-profile guy coming, in [Connor] Brewer. That would make it a little bit more difficult, where at West Virginia he is already penciled in as the next guy.”

Childress was interested enough in Texas to take in its game against Oklahoma State on Oct. 15.

There are other schools in pursuit as well.

“Oklahoma State is still really making a push,” Hill said. “Clemson, Oregon State, Arizona, Arizona State, Tennessee. Arkansas is making a real heavy push for him right now.”

Childress has completed 172 of 269 passes for 3,034 yards and 40 touchdowns against six interceptions this season. He also has rushed 29 times for 75 yards and four scores for the Falcons, who are 9-0.
