Welcome to your daily Board Meeting. Each evening we’ll update you on the day’s hottest topics on the HornsNation forum.
1. Rank UT’s defense for 2012: Nicholas74230 posed the topic with his own hopeful response that the Longhorns will finish with the nation’s top-ranked defense. Most of the responses predicted a top 10 finish. What is interesting is that many expect this defense to be better than last year, but that will truly be hard to tell until a few games into the season. It will certainly be hard to gauge the impact of replacing Keenan Robinson and Emmanuel Acho. They were the ringleaders of the defense and much of their value came with getting players in the right positions within Manny Diaz’s scheme. Their roles will now be filled by two first-time starters. Finding another safety and depth in the secondary are also big factors.
The schedule could also play a factor. West Virginia is a point machine and everyone understands Oklahoma’s offensive prowess. What isn’t known is how Baylor and Oklahoma State will replace their litany of playmakers.
Got a defensive predictions? Let’s hear it.
2. Ash or McCoy? Brown says both: Mack Brown spoke to the media Friday about the upcoming spring game. Carter Strickland posted that while most fans and media seem to know that David Ash will be Texas’ starting QB, Brown cautioned that there was no frontrunner yet.
Whatever the reason, this has been Brown’s mantra. Maybe he wants to keep pushing the competition, maybe he’s afraid of outright naming someone and it backfires. Who knows? In all likelihood he knows, but most importantly for the upcoming season, hopefully the team knows who its leader will be.
3. Cornerback targets attending spring game: The entire 2012 class as well as committed members of the 2013 class are expected to be in attendance at Sunday’s spring game. Also attending are players with offers and other targets. It’s the defensive back targets that are, rightfully, getting the most attention.
This has been a much talked about topic since Texas has yet to offer any in-state defensive backs. The two leading prospects -- Maurice Smith and Antwuan Davis are expected to be in DKR. Whether they leave with offers, remains to be seen, as has been the case all spring. The duo has expressed their interest in Texas while Longhorns coaches have asked for their patience while they are being evaluated.
The remaining spots are precious in this class, but Texas needs defensive backs. Should Texas offer the pair or wait on the likes of Marcell Harris and Vonn Bell? Let’s hear your take.
