DESOTO, Texas - - ESPNU Watch List running back Dontre Wilson (DeSoto, Texas/DeSoto) is well aware of Texas’ situation at running back. It’s overflowing with young talent.
The way he looks at it, though, it’s going to be that way at most every program in the country.
“It is always on my mind but if you can play you will get on the field,” Wilson said.
Wilson’s outlook on the situation should have Longhorns fans feeling optimistic about their chances of landing one of the state’s top dual threat backs.
Texas is in Wilson’s top five along with Oregon, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State and Notre Dame.
Those schools aren’t listed in a particular order, but Wilson’s following statement might lead one to believe the Longhorns are somewhere near the top.
“Texas is always my school that I want to go to because I am from Texas,” said Wilson, who was one of two running backs to get offered at Texas’ junior day on Feb. 12. The other, Kyle Hicks, has already committed.
Another school that appears to be situated at the top is Oregon, which already has a commitment from Thomas Tyner (Beaverton, Ore./Aloha), one of the nation’s top running backs.
Wilson hasn’t visited Oregon yet but he will on Monday with his father. The two aren’t just going up there for a day either. They’ll be there until Thursday.
“People say there is not much out there so I want to go out there and see what it would be like away from home,” Wilson said. “That’s why I am going to stay up there for so many days because it is like 31 hours away from here. I am trying to get used to it just in case I go there.”
Once Wilson checks Oregon off his visits list he’ll only have Notre Dame left to visit of his top five schools. He said he’ll do that during his senior year.
In addition to his top five, Wilson has offers from Arkansas, Colorado, Missouri, Oklahoma, Oregon State, Clemson and West Virginia.
