Daje Johnson to make Texas visit

1/18/2012

TCU athlete commitment Daje Johnson (Pflugerville, Texas/Hendrickson) has informed HornsNation that he will take an official visit to Texas on Jan. 28.

Johnson (5-foot-9, 180 pounds) is a four-star prospect rated as the No. 21 athlete and No. 144 recruit overall in the ESPNU 150.

Texas’ official visit invite to Johnson could mean a few things. One, that the Longhorns understand that they are not as much of a player in the pursuit of Dorial Green-Beckham as they once were, and want to get a feel for Johnson as another option.

It might also mean that Texas simply wants to bring another offensive weapon on board to replace what it lost in the de-commitment of wide receiver Thomas Johnson (Dallas, Texas/Skyline).

Johnson doesn't have an offer from Texas, but one could definitely come when he gets to Austin. Keep in mind that Oklahoma commitment Daniel Brooks (Port Lavaca, Texas/Calhoun) does have a Texas offer, and Longhorns coaches have discussed him coming in for an official visit as well. It’s unclear right now whether Brooks will accept the invite.

As for Johnson, he initially reached out to Texas, via text message with Mack Brown, during the season to see if the Longhorns had any interest in him. There was enough intrigue for the two sides to meet face-to-face months ago. But nothing more had come from that visit until today.

Johnson committed to TCU on March 26, 2011, over offers from Cal, Baylor, Houston, Kansas State and Texas Tech.

His father, Clyde Johnson, was a cornerback at Kansas State.
