NEW ORLEANS -- Running back Leonard Fournette (New Orleans/Saint Augustine), the No. 1-rated prospect in the Class of 2014, has planned a surprise recruiting visit to Texas A&M on Saturday for the Aggies’ meeting with Alabama, according to another top player.

No. 1-rated athlete Speedy Noil (New Orleans/Edna Karr) said he was informed by A&M coaches that Fournette would attend the big game. Noil is visiting the College Station, Texas, campus with teammate Gerald Willis III, No. 29 in the ESPN 300 and the third-ranked defensive end.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Cameron Echols-Luper is what you would call versatile. He’s a dual-threat quarterback at Auburn (Ala.) High School who also serves as the team’s punter. He has even taken turns returning punts during warmups this year.

“My freshman year I was returning punts,” Echols-Luper said. “That what I started at. With me punting, that gives us a threat back there just in case. The versatility is what God blessed me with. It’s going to help me a lot.”

The three-star athlete, who committed to Texas A&M last month, expects to play wide receiver when he gets to College Station.

UPLAND, Calif. -- Defensive end Joe Mathis (Upland, Calif./Upland) didn’t shy away from competition this offseason, even though he might have had a reason to. The 6-foot-4, 255-pound lineman said he fractured a bone in his foot back in April, but pushed through the injury this summer and took part in several camps.

“Eventually, I had to stay off of it for three weeks, ice it and all that,” Mathis said. “It was pretty painful to play with that. I played on it and made it worse, but I’m back now.”

Mathis is back in several ways. After getting up to 270 pounds, Mathis put in some serious work this summer.

Two-sport star Trey Quinn (Lake Charles, La./Barbe) opted to take the summer off from one of his sports, baseball, to concentrate on what may be his better sport, football.

That decision is starting to pay off.

After receiving an offer from LSU at the end of LSU's summer camp on Wednesday, the Class of 2014 wide receiver rode with his father to College Station, Texas, to a visit to Texas A&M Thursday. There, he received an offer from Aggies coach Kevin Sumlin.
