Texas A&M Aggies: Tony Brown

HUNTSVILLE, Texas — When it comes to the track, success is almost as natural to Kendall Sheffield (Missouri City, Texas/Thurgood Marshall) as it is on the football field.

Yes, Sheffield is one of the most notable Class of 2015 football prospects in the Houston area and the state of Texas, but the cornerback has been running track as long as he's been playing football. Over the weekend in the Texas Class 4A Region III track and field championships, he showed off those skills, winning the 300-meter hurdles (37.56 seconds) and finishing second to ESPN 150 cornerback Tony Brown in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.97 seconds.

It was his first regional title in high school and he'll head to the Texas state championships in May in both events.

ESPN 150 targets: Texas A&M

Texas A&M has three commits in the 2014 ESPN 150, which was released today. Here's a look at the Aggies' top 10 targets in the ESPN 150, listed from highest to lowest ranked:

1. CB Adoree' Jackson (Gardena, Calif./Junipero Serra)
5-foot-11, 183 pounds
ESPN 150 Rank: 5

Why they want him: Speed and athleticism. Jackson has most of what coaches want in a cornerback. His fluid hips, foot quickness and natural athleticism make him an elite prospect. Could wind up on the offensive side of the ball and said some schools are recruiting him as a receiver.

Who else wants him: Plenty of power programs have offered Jackson, including Florida, Florida State, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oregon and USC.

Odds they get him: Jackson said he intends to visit Texas A&M this summer, so the Aggies will have their chance to impress the five-star prospect. USC and UCLA are also schools that the Illinois native is interested in but Aggies' secondary coach Marcel Yates has experience recruiting the West Coast from his days at Boise State and landed 2013 ESPN 150 receiver Sebastian LaRue for the Aggies earlier this year.

Watching ESPN Watch List cornerback Tony Brown (Beaumont, Texas/Ozen) compete is almost like watching a one-man show. No matter what he does, there’s the understood notion that he’s going to excel.

On the football field, he’s one of the nation’s best cornerbacks, an athlete with more than 20 scholarship offers. Over the weekend, Brown not only won the defensive back MVP award at the Dallas Nike Football Training Camp but also earned an invitation to The Opening this summer in Oregon.

ALLEN, Texas -- The 2013 Nike Football Training Camp tour continued in the Dallas area on Sunday as several top prospects from Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana showcased their skills at the brand new Eagle Stadium in Allen, Texas. The defensive back group was as loaded as expected, and several players earned invitations to The Opening.

Recruiting Nation’s Max Olson attended the camp. Here’s what he learned:

The Nike Football Training Camp series will continue outside of Dallas on Sunday. Athletes will trek to Allen, Texas, the home of one of the most impressive high school stadiums in the country. Allen Eagles Stadium, a $60-million facility, opened last year and featured nearly 22,000 fans watching Texas powers Allen and Southlake Carroll clash.

Here are five storylines to watch on Sunday.

Talented DBs aplenty

It’s been said on multiple occasions that the 2014 class may be one of the strongest in years at producing big-time defensive backs in the region. The battle for defensive back MVP has the potential of being extremely competitive with players such as Laurence Jones (Monroe, La./Neville), Jamal Adams (Lewisville, Texas/Hebron), Tony Brown (Beaumont, Texas/Ozen), Steven Parker (Jenks, Okla./Jenks) and Arrion Springs (San Antonio/Roosevelt) expected to be in attendance. Chris Hardeman (Houston/Alief Taylor) has committed to LSU, while Dylan Sumner-Gardner (Mesquite, Texas/West Mesquite) and Armani Watts (Forney, Texas/North Forney) have pledged to Texas A&M. Deionte Thompson (Orange, Texas/West Orange-Stark), a 2015 prospect, has verbally committed to Alabama. All of the DBs will have their shots in one-on-one drills against equally talented ESPN Watch List receivers such as Malachi Dupre (River Ridge, La./John Curtis), K.D. Cannon (Mount Pleasant, Texas/Mount Pleasant) and Texas commit Lorenzo Joe (Abilene, Texas/Cooper).

AUSTIN, Texas – Tony Brown simply makes it look easy.

The ESPN Watch List cornerback from Beaumont (Texas) Ozen did it again last Saturday at Texas Relays, blowing away the field in the 110-meter hurdles and reminding everyone why recruiting is one of the last things on his mind right now.

Brown entered the meet ranked No. 1 nationally in the event. Then he put up a blazing time of 13.38 seconds in the finals to establish a new Texas Relays record.

Forgive Tony Brown if he doesn’t care much about his recruiting process right now. He’s too busy working to break track records.

The ESPN Watch List cornerback from Beaumont (Texas) Ozen just ran the fastest time in the nation among high school athletes in the 60-meter hurdles. He’s off to New York this weekend for his final indoor track meet of the season.

So, naturally, Brown isn’t wasting much time worrying about what comes next in his recruitment.

Oklahoma and Texas A&M are getting awfully familiar with each other here lately. The Aggies broke the hearts of Sooners fans by landing the commitment of ESPN 150 defensive tackle Justin Manning (Dallas/Kimball) two weeks ago.

OU returned the favor by getting three-star defensive tackle Kerrick Huggins (Dallas/Skyline) to flip to the Sooners from the Aggies.

OU basketball got a leg up on A&M with a 64-54 win in Oklahoma City last weekend. Oh yeah, there’s also the Cotton Bowl coming up Jan. 4 at Cowboys Stadium.

Big weekend awaits Texas A&M Aggies

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Texas A&M already had its introduction to Southeastern Conference football.

It wasn't a successful debut for the Aggies but it was a respectable one, a 20-17 home loss to Florida on Sept. 8. With a redshirt freshman quarterback making his first collegiate start and a coaching staff making its debut in Aggieland with new offensive and defensive schemes in tow, the Aggies showed signs of what could be with deficiencies that prevented them from winning, things they've worked to correct since then.

Johnny Manziel
Kevin Jairaj/US PresswireThrough six games, freshman signal-caller Johnny Manziel has passed for 14 touchdowns and ran for 10 more.
More than five weeks have passed since that day and much has changed. The Aggies (5-1) haven't lost a game since and in that span have collected their first two SEC wins. Johnny Manziel has gone from largely unknown to one of the nation's most exciting offensive players. And a lot of questions are being answered from whether the offense would work (it has), to whether the defense would improve (it has, the 59-57 thriller against Louisiana Tech notwithstanding) to whether the Aggies could close games and fix the second-half collapses that plagued them in 2011 (so far, they have).

On Saturday, the Aggies get an introduction of a different kind -- one to a top-10 SEC team -- the LSU Tigers when they enter Kyle Field at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Florida is No. 2 in the BCS standings now but was 23rd in the Associated Press poll when the Aggies met the Gators. The No. 6 Tigers, thought to be a national title contender before the season began, have largely been viewed as one of the two most significant challenges on the Aggies' inaugural SEC schedule (No. 1 Alabama being the other).

Cornerback Tony Brown (Beaumont, Texas/Ozen) still has two years of varsity football remaining, but he already has 17 offers and the chance to play at some of the most recognized programs in the country.

The most recent offer for the 2014 defensive back comes from coach Lane Kiffin and USC. Brown spoke with Kiffin today and added another big offer before his weekend excursion to Baton Rouge, La., as he will participate in LSU’s four-day camp starting Sunday.

“I actually talked to [secondary] Coach [Marvin] Sanders first, and then he gave the phone to Coach Kiffin,” Brown said. “It feels great; I’m very excited. I feel like my hard work is manifesting and coming to life.
