Texas A&M Aggies: Texas A&M junior day

Going into last weekend, Texas A&M had a little ground to make up when it came to the race for Katy (Texas) Seven Lakes defensive end Jarrett Johnson.

The 6-foot-3, 225-pound prospect already had visited Texas, but his visit to Aggieland closed the gap in the race. The Aggies made quite the impression on Johnson, enough for him to call the race "even."

KATY, Texas -- After a visit to Texas for its junior day and a flurry of offers that followed, Katy (Texas) Seven Lakes defensive end Jarrett Johnson had a good feel for where he stood in the recruiting process.

In mid-February, Johnson tabbed Texas as his favorite school and Texas A&M as his No. 2 choice. At the time, he hadn't yet visited the A&M campus.

BRENHAM, Texas -- ESPN Watch List cornerback Darrion Johnson keeps his eye on one specific area when he takes in a team's practice during a visit.

Naturally, he watches the defensive backs.

Johnson is looking for several things: how the secondary coach works with his players, what the tempo is like, how physical the players are. Those are all important things for the 5-foot-10, 180-pound cornerback from Brenham (Texas) High School as he gets a feel for what school fits him best.

Now that the offers are piling up, Otaro Alaka thinks it’s time to slow down and do some thinking.

Texas A&M was the latest to offer a scholarship to the Houston Cypress Falls outside linebacker during its Saturday junior day, after LSU and Texas did earlier in the week.

If there was one thing that Spring (Texas) Klein Oak linebacker Ja'Von Shelley enjoyed about his trip to Texas A&M's junior day, it was the vibe during the Aggies' first spring practice.

More specifically, the vibe he felt coming from the speakers inside the McFerrin Athletic Center.

"They had some music going," Shelley said. "I liked that. It gets you hype for practice. ... I loved that. I was dancing on the sidelines."

The scouts team at ESPN took a close look at the video of Nederland (Texas) High School defensive tackle DeShawn Washington, who committed to Texas A&M on Saturday evening after the completion of its second junior day.

Washington had offers from Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech and Baylor, among others. Here's a sampling of our scouts' take on why Washington is a coveted prospect:

"Washington moves around the D-Line in high school, but at the next level will be more an interior player. He possesses good size at this stage with room to still add some more needed bulk. He can be an active and physical player who displays good explosiveness off the ball. He demonstrates the ability to fire out low with hip roll on contact and can generate good power from his lower body and put a blocker on his heels. He flashes good upper body strength and with his aggressive nature he can push blockers aside."

Texas A&M's second junior day of the year has gotten better as the hours have passed.

After scoring two commitments in the afternoon, a third 2014 player is on board in the form of Nederland (Texas) High School defensive tackle DeShawn Washington. At 6-foot-3 and 275 pounds, Washington is the 10th commitment in the Aggies' 2014 class and the first defensive tackle.

On his Twitter account, Washington posted "It's official, I'm going to be a Aggie," and also confirmed his commitment via text message to GigEmNation. He was one of several prospects in attendance at Texas A&M's junior day on Saturday in College Station, Texas. He joins Dylan Sumner-Gardner and Armani Watts as prospects who gave their pledge to the Aggies on Saturday.

Texas A&M picked up a solid defensive back in Dylan Sumner-Gardner (Mesquite, Texas/West Mesquite) -- someone who, if needed, can play both positions in the secondary -- Saturday afternoon. Later in the day, the Aggies picked up a player who can see time at several positions on both sides of the ball.

When it comes to defensive backs, the class of 2014 is a strong one in the Lone Star State.

And Texas A&M is doing quite a job locking down several as commitments, adding two more to their 2014 haul on Saturday in the form of ESPN Watch List safety Dylan Sumner-Gardner and Forney (Texas) North Forney athlete Armani Watts.

Watch List DB is No. 8 for TAMU

ESPN Watch List defensive back Dylan Sumner-Gardner is many things. He’s a hard-hitting, fundamentally sound safety. He’s a budding vocal and physical leader on the field. Recently, he became a more spiritually sound person after getting baptized in January.

Most importantly, Sumner-Gardner is a maturing individual, someone who understands that your favorite thing sometimes isn’t what’s best for you. When he decommitted from Clemson -- the school he consistently called his “dream school” -- on Jan. 31, he knew then that sometimes, a favorite isn’t always the best option.

With that said, Sumner-Gardner decided to do what’s best for him on Saturday.
