Weekend Rewind: Texas A&M

By Sam Khan Jr.

It was actually before the weekend began that Texas A&M got its most significant recruiting news that Aggies' fans are still buzzing about as Thursday brought the commitment of ESPN 150 defensive tackle Justin Manning.

The No. 8 tackle in the nation and the No. 88 player in the ESPN 150, Manning's acquisition was significant, especially considering that he is ranked as the top defensive tackle in Texas. It's a need position for the Aggies and with Manning on board, they now have five commitments at the position.

Thursday was also the day that ESPN 150 athlete Ricky Seals-Jones finalized his announcement date, which is Monday. Texas A&M fans are expecting good news when he reveals his choice to the world.

The Aggies also got an unofficial visitor for their bowl practice on Friday, in 2014 outside linebacker Cameron Hampton, an ESPN Watch List prospect from Dallas Carter.

But perhaps the biggest recruiting news is something that happened with a current player, as Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel won the Heisman Trophy. That is a positive for the Aggies in many ways, including recruiting, as Manziel became the first Aggie since 1957 [John David Crow] to take home the award. Recruits now know that an accomplishment like that is possible at Texas A&M and with Manziel being a redshirt freshmen, it won't hurt for 2013 and 2014 prospects to know they'll have a chance to go play with a Heisman Trophy winner.
