Texas A&M Aggies

Looking for a candidate for Texas’ next 2015 commit? Keep an eye on Kemah Siverand.

The Houston Cypress Ridge sophomore wide receiver has been talking with the Longhorns coaching staff after a recent visit and believes he’ll receive an offer this spring. If that does happen, he could rather quickly pull the trigger.

The 6-foot, 178-pound wideout broke down where things stand as his early recruitment gets started.

ALLEN, Texas -- The recruiting process has been good to Kyler Murray so far.

The 5-foot-11, 170-pound quarterback has seen several a handful of power conference programs not only show interest, but step forward with scholarship offers for the 2015 prospect.

Arizona State, Clemson, Ohio State and Texas Tech are the programs that have already thrown their hats into the ring.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Donnie Baggs isn't the biggest guy -- or even the biggest linebacker -- on Texas A&M's defense.

But he might have the biggest load to carry this spring and fall for the Aggies. And it's a critical role, one that demands success if Texas A&M is to consider the 2013 season a success on defense.

Donnie Baggs
Sam Khan Jr./ESPNLinebacker Donnie Baggs is taking on a leadership role for the Aggies.
In many ways, Baggs' transition -- from reserve linebacker and spot starter last season to likely full-time starter at middle linebacker this season -- is indicative of what the entire group of Aggies linebackers are going through. Change.

Turn your eyes to that group on the Coolidge Grass Practice Fields this spring and what you see -- at least in terms of personnel -- is significantly different than what you would have seen at this time last year. A unit that was considered a strength coming into the 2012 season, with two experienced seniors (Sean Porter and Jonathan Stewart) leading the way is now a group in transition, with two new starters and several players who weren't even on the Texas A&M campus prior to January. And that includes the position coach, Mark Hagen, who is in his first year with the Aggies.

Earlier this spring, head coach Kevin Sumlin joked that he doesn't talk to Hagen much because Hagen's too busy melding all the new players together.

"I don't talk to him much because he's busy," Sumlin said with a laugh. "His plate's full, he's running around, he's meeting, he's chasing guys all over the place."

But the 6-foot-1, 230-pound Baggs is at the center of it all -- literally and figuratively. Not only is he responsible for getting acclimated to a new role, he's also the point man for getting the rest of the front seven lined up properly before the offense snaps the football. That task is easier for someone like Stewart, who was an experienced senior with plenty of football under his belt, than it is for Baggs, who has never been a regular starter.

Prep QBs feel 'the Johnny Football effect'

When dozens of quarterbacks descended on Irving, Texas, for the Elite 11 Dallas regionals Saturday, a face familiar to all of them showed up and offered some words of advice: Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel.

Not only is the Heisman Trophy-winning Manziel someone to look up to for college hopefuls, he's the one they're studying and emulating, says RecruitingNation's Mitch Sherman. Only about three years older than many of the quarterbacks in attendance, Manziel's effect on the next generation of QBs is profound.

ALLEN, Texas -- Cedar Hill (Texas) High School is no stranger to producing Division I football talent, and 2015 receiver Damarkus Lodge looks to be one in the next wave of Longhorns to have a chance to play big-time college football.

The sophomore has made unofficial visits to three in-state programs already this spring and picked up his first FBS offer -- from Arizona State -- in the meantime.

ALLEN, Texas -- There is a growing sentiment among those tied in with ESPN Watch List safety Edwin Freeman (Arlington, Texas/Bowie) that TCU is the prevailing favorite right now.

It makes sense, given that Freeman’s former high school coach Kenny Perry was recently hired at TCU as its director of high school relations. So what does Freeman think of that notion?

ALLEN, Texas -- Some recruits have been all over the country and have taken visits to all their top schools. But ESPN Watch List defensive end Deondre Clark (Oklahoma City/Douglass) isn't one of them.

Clark hasn't ventured far from Oklahoma this year, and that won't change anytime soon. But he definitely will look at schools outside the state.

SEC West will be tough climb for Aggies

Texas A&M crushed outsider expectations in its inaugural SEC season, finishing tied for second in the SEC West with a win over eventual BCS champion Alabama and an 11-2 record.

While the Aggies had tremendous first-year success and are bringing back many key players -- namely Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Johnny Manziel -- they aren't necessarily the "team to beat," according to Mark Schlabach. There will still be a rugged battle for the top spot in college football's toughest division.

ALLEN, Texas -- The last couple of month have been memorable for Orange (Texas) West Orange-Stark 2015 safety Deionte Thompson.

In February, Thompson attended an Alabama junior day, received an offer from head coach Nick Saban and promptly committed.

In recent weeks, the 6-foot-3, 172-pound prospect visited two other schools -- Texas and Texas A&M -- and picked up offers from both. On Sunday, he made the trek to the Dallas-Fort Worth area for the Dallas Nike Football Training Camp.

Needless to say, things have been busy.

ALLEN, Texas -- The 2013 Nike Football Training Camp tour continued in the Dallas area on Sunday as several top prospects from Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana showcased their skills at the brand new Eagle Stadium in Allen, Texas. The Nike Football Training Camp series will continue outside of Dallas on Sunday. Athletes will trek to Allen, Texas, the home of one of the most impressive high school stadiums in the country. Allen Eagles Stadium, a $60-million facility, opened last year and featured nearly 22,000 fans watching Texas powers Allen and Southlake Carroll clash.

Here are five storylines to watch on Sunday.

Talented DBs aplenty

It’s been said on multiple occasions that the 2014 class may be one of the strongest in years at producing big-time defensive backs in the region. The battle for defensive back MVP has the potential of being extremely competitive with players such as Laurence Jones (Monroe, La./Neville), Jamal Adams (Lewisville, Texas/Hebron), Tony Brown (Beaumont, Texas/Ozen), Steven Parker (Jenks, Okla./Jenks) and Arrion Springs (San Antonio/Roosevelt) expected to be in attendance. Chris Hardeman (Houston/Alief Taylor) has committed to LSU, while Dylan Sumner-Gardner (Mesquite, Texas/West Mesquite) and Armani Watts (Forney, Texas/North Forney) have pledged to Texas A&M. Deionte Thompson (Orange, Texas/West Orange-Stark), a 2015 prospect, has verbally committed to Alabama. All of the DBs will have their shots in one-on-one drills against equally talented ESPN Watch List receivers such as Malachi Dupre (River Ridge, La./John Curtis), K.D. Cannon (Mount Pleasant, Texas/Mount Pleasant) and Texas commit Lorenzo Joe (Abilene, Texas/Cooper).

While there were plenty of 2014 prospects in the house for Texas A&M's "Friday Night Lights" event, there were also several notable 2015 prospects in attendance.

One of them -- 2015 running back Nick Brossette -- made the trek from Baton Rouge, La. The trip was a fruitful one.

Katy (Texas) High School running back Rodney Anderson has been to Texas A&M before, taking in a game last fall, but his experience in Aggieland for the "Friday Night Lights" scrimmage provided a bonus for the 2015 running back.

A scholarship offer.

After Anderson experienced the scrimmage and the atmosphere surrounding it, he went up to Kevin Sumlin's office for a visit and received the news that the Aggies were offering him.
