Meet the run-ons: WR Chris Geiss

By Josh Moyer

Every weekday, as part of an ongoing series, NittanyNation will take a closer look at a Penn State walk-on.

Vitals: Wideout Chris Geiss, Malvern (Pa.) Great Valley, 6-foot-3, 190 pounds

Picked Penn State over: Heavy interest from FCS schools James Madison, Villanova and William & Mary. (He accepted PSU's walk-on invitation before talks with those schools progressed to scholarships.)

Why he picked PSU: He grew up a Penn State fan and has been to at least one game each season. He met Joe Paterno in grade school, and the coach told him that one day he'd be playing for PSU. When the opportunity presented itself, Geiss said he just couldn't say no to his childhood dream.

State of the position: There will be at least nine wideouts on scholarship this season, and the group is pretty young. Eugene Lewis, Trevor Williams, Jonathan Warner, Matt Zanellato, Malik Golden and incoming freshman DaeSean Hamilton all have 2-4 years of eligibility remaining. Allen Robinson highlights this group, and there's lot of potential here already.

Strengths: He ran a laser-timed 4.56-second 40 at his high school camp, and he does a good job at avoiding tacklers in the open field. He has good athleticism and shows good hands.

Weaknesses: He played quarterback in high school, so he needs to learn the fundamentals of playing wide receiver. He knows it'll be quite a transition to learning routes and catching balls in traffic. In other words, he's a little raw right now.

Potential impact: Geiss was hearing from a handful of FBS schools because he's an athlete. He doesn't have top-end speed, but he's a project wideout who could contribute a few years down the line. It'll be difficult to break into the lineup with so many young wideouts, so he'll likely be relegated to the scout team until he at least becomes an upperclassman. He could contribute on special teams sooner, however.

Quotables: "It's a dream. It's awesome. I can't even describe the feeling. I just broke down in tears after Coach [Ron] Vanderlinden called me to tell me I had that offer. I accepted right away. I just hugged my coach and said thank you."

Getting to know Geiss: Favorite movies are "Stepbrothers" and "Remember the Titans." ... Favorite TV show is "The Walking Dead." ... Favorite food is a sirloin from Outback Steakhouse. ... Favorite musicians/bands are Maroon 5 and Meek Mill. ... Dream vacation spot is the Caribbean, somewhere on a beach.
