Meet the run-ons: QB Jack Seymour
By Josh Moyer
Every weekday, as part of an ongoing series, NittanyNation will take a closer look at a Penn State walk-on.
Vitals: QB Jack Seymour, Indianapolis (Ind.) Park Tudor, 6-foot-2, 201 pounds.
<1--inline1-->Picked Penn State over: FBS offers from Western Michigan and Ball-State; FCS offer from Southern Illinois.
Why he picked PSU: Despite garnering offers elsewhere, PSU boasted the better academic reputation, and that initially caught Seymour's eye. When he visited for "Run-On Day," he liked the campus and stadium a lot -- and he really clicked with Bill O'Brien and quarterbacks coach Charlie Fisher. With the sanctions, he felt like he could make a difference as a walk-on, so that combination led him to choose PSU.
State of the position:Steven Bench is the only returning scholarship quarterback, but there's still some competition for the starting job. Juco QB Tyler Ferguson and incoming freshman Christian Hackenberg will try to unseat Bench, while early enrollees (and walk-ons) DJ Crook and Austin Whipple will provide a little more depth.
Strengths: With just 28 players on his high school team and a small offensive line, Seymour found himself often running for his life. With that, however, he caught teams' eyes by being able to throw well on the run and by keeping his eyes downfield in the face of pressure. He's athletic and can make plays if something breaks down.
Weaknesses: He admitted he might have some happy feet in the pocket now and needs to learn to trust his line and not scramble right away. He also tends to leave weight on his back foot when he throws.
Potential impact: PSU didn't need another walk-on QB, but it was pretty difficult to turn down Seymour. He flew under the FBS radar because he played on a bad team, but he still impressed enough to garner several scholarships. He could be one of the bigger surprises of this run-on class and eventually might find himself as Hackenberg's backup.
Quotables: "I can compete, and that's what I'm eager for. To see what a great guy O'Brien was -- and I can't say enough good things about him -- it just really is the perfect fit. He said he wanted me, and to know I could earn my spot, wherever that may be, and that's big."
Getting to know Seymour: Favorite movie is "Stepbrothers" ("I love Will Ferrell and all his movies.") ... Favorite TV show is "The Walking Dead" and "Duck Dynasty" ... Favorite food is ribeye with lots of hot sauce and A-1 ... Favorite band/musician is Florida Georgia Line and Jason Aldean ... Dream vacation is a cruise to Europe, visiting southern France, Monaco and Italy.
