Meet the run-ons: RB Adam Geiger
By Josh Moyer
Every weekday, as part of an ongoing series, NittanyNation will take a closer look at a Penn State walk-on.
Vitals: Running back Adam Geiger, Camp Hill (Pa.) Trinity, 5-foot-11, 192 pounds.
Picked Penn State over: D-II schools Shippensburg, West Chester and IUP. (He took the PSU walk-on invitation before his official visits to those schools and wasn't sure if he'd receive scholarship help.)
Why he picked PSU: He was looking at several different schools, but his mind kept going back to PSU. Playing for a major D-I program was too big an opportunity to turn down, and the academics made him feel a lot better about the decision.
State of the position: Penn State needs a few extra bodies here, because only four scholarship players are at tailback right now -- which is a little low, seeing as PSU was forced to turn to its fifth-string RB last season. Zach Zwinak leads the way here, with Bill Belton, Akeel Lynch and Richy Anderson trailing behind.
Strengths: Geiger is a strong, well-rounded player who can bench 225 pounds about 18 times. He has good hands and feels like his instincts really help him gain extra yards. He said he can just feel when someone's on the outside. He also ran an official 4.58-second 40 at a SPARQ camp, which is a faster time than Zwinak or Belton turned in last year.
Weaknesses: He's trying to work on his spin move, because he can sometimes lose balance and needs to work on that. Also, he admitted, he needs to be a little more patient for a hole to open up. There's just some fundamentals here he needs to polish.
Potential impact: Geiger is a versatile athlete, and PSU's coaches told him he could play another position -- but they wanted him to try out tailback first. He played just about every defensive position in high school (FS, SS, LB, DE), and he could have a future at safety or wideout if tailback doesn't pan out. His future, at least in the short-term, is definitely on special teams.
Quotables: "Oh, I just went right into focus mode after I committed. I've been training extra hard and working on another level, because I know I got to compete, and I want to get stronger, bigger and faster so I can go in there and be the best I can be -- and, maybe, earn myself a scholarship."
Getting to know Geiger: Favorite movie is "300" or "Troy" ("I'm a big old-time warrior movie fan. 'Troy' has a better storyline, but '300' has better action.") ... Favorite book is "The Ravenous Brain" ... Favorite food is any kind of steak ... Favorite musician is Drake ... Dream vacation is a tour of Europe.
