Meet the run-ons: LB Kyle Searfoss

By Josh Moyer

Every weekday, as part of an ongoing series, NittanyNation will take a closer look at a Penn State walk-on.

Vitals: LB Kyle Searfoss, Lewisberry (Pa.) Red Land, 6-foot-2, 225 pounds.

Picked Penn State over: Walk-on invitation at FCS school Towson, partial scholarships from Div. II Kutztown and Millersville.

Why he picked PSU: He said it was his dream to play at Penn State, and it was difficult to turn down the run-on offer since he didn't really get any other FBS looks. He grew up a fan, went to at least one game a year and committed within 10 minutes of receiving Larry Johnson's Facebook message that offered him a spot.

State of the position: There's a lot of quality depth here. At least seven scholarship linebackers will be on the roster, and there are also a handful of returning walk-ons at this position. This is Linebacker U, after all, so this might just be the position that would be hardest to earn playing time on.

Strengths: He's a good run-stuffer who reads the ball pretty well. He believes he's versatile enough to provide some depth, and he runs about a 4.65-second 40. He watches a lot of film, and he definitely has the frame to one day become that prototypical linebacker size. He's close to it already.

Weaknesses: Plays a little upright, which affects his ability to get off blockers. He also wants to increase his strength and improve his agility so he could contribute on special teams.

Potential impact: Searfoss' physical makeup will one day mirror that of Gerald Hodges (6-2, 237) and Michael Mauti (6-2, 232) -- but it's going to be very difficult to see any situational playing time as a walk-on linebacker. This is historically a strong position for PSU, so Searfoss will likely have to make his impact on special teams and/or the scout team.

Quotables: "It's like a dream that's coming true. Really, I'm a huge Penn State fan. I know pretty much everything there is to know about Penn State. I was kind of born to go to Penn State."

Getting to know Searfoss: Favorite movie is "Saving Private Ryan" ... Favorite TV show is "American Pickers" ("I just find the job to be pretty interesting and, the people they meet, I find to be amusing.") ... Favorite food is a ribeye steak from Texas Roadhouse ... Favorite musician is Kenny Chesney ... Dream vacation spot is somewhere in the Caribbean.
