Recruitment taking off for Bushell-Beatty

By Jared Shanker

Only three years into his football career, Paramus (N.J.) Catholic offensive tackle Juwann Bushell-Beatty was not too worried about when his first offer would come. He was still new to the game and figured at some point the colleges would come.

UMass, in its second season as an FBS program, was the first to offer the 6-foot-6, 320-pound lineman in January. But then came two storied programs and BCS bowl participants this past season. First came Florida, and a few days later Florida State followed suit.

“I’m blessed to have been given the opportunity to begin with, but I am very excited to be offered by both teams,” he said. “And I didn’t think things would take off this fast.”

The Gators have recruited the state of New Jersey well going back to when Urban Meyer was coaching at Florida, landing Garden State prospects Josh Evans and Will Hill. Current Gators coach Will Muschamp landed a commitment from 2013 New Jersey cornerback Tre’ Bell before a falling out landed the four-star at Vanderbilt.

Bushell-Beatty is giving careful consideration to Florida and is impressed with the Gators’ style of play under Muschamp.

“I like the way they play,” he said. “[Florida’s] intensity and the passion that I’ve seen players bring to the game, that I like, and coming off a team that plays that way makes me feel at home."

As for Florida rival Florida State, Bushell-Beatty is not as familiar with the Seminoles.

“I don’t know much about FSU, but I know that they are a very good program,” Bushell-Beatty said.

West Virginia offered Friday.

Penn State has been on Bushell-Beatty for several months and hosted him for a visit in October. He will visit the Nittany Lions on Feb. 20 and will check out Michigan and Ohio State in April.
