Meet the run-ons: LS Sean Corcoran

By Josh Moyer

Every weekday, as part of an ongoing series, NittanyNation will take a closer look at a Penn State walk-on.

Vitals: LS Sean Corcoran, Kankakee (Ill.) Bishop McNamara, 6-foot-2, 210 pounds.

Sean Corcoran
Kankakee, Ill., long snapper Sean Corcoran will fulfill a dream when he joins Penn State as a preferred walk-on next season.
Picked Penn State over: Walk-on invitations from Air Force, Duke, Northwestern and Vanderbilt.

Why he picked PSU: One of the first things Corcoran looked at in a school was just how big the football program was. Since Beaver Stadium held 100,000-plus fans, PSU became an instant favorite. "Penn State football's a religion," he added. He also liked the academics and the scenic campus, with its mountains.

State of the position: Ty Howle, who mostly dealt with field goals and PATs, returns as a fifth-year senior. But the two players who handled punts -- Michael Furhman and Emery Etter -- both graduate, and it's not clear who might be able to replace them.

Strengths: He's a consistent and accurate long-snapper who prides himself on his work ethic. In the last 12 months, he has attended more than 10 snapping camps, and he was at 15 different college camps over the summer. He also takes private long-snapping lessons. He has been honing his craft for less than two full years, but he quickly has made long strides.

Weaknesses: He is only 210 pounds and wants to put on 30-40 pounds by next year. As a result, his frame prevents him from playing on the offensive line outside of special teams. He acknowledged his footwork also needs to improve, and his coverage ability on punts definitely can get better.

Potential impact: Corcoran will head to PSU at the end of June, and he'll instantly compete to be the starting long-snapper. He could see time right away, and he was the first run-on to be offered and commit. Out of PSU's current count of 21 run-ons, he just might be the most likely to turn into a four-year starter.

Quotables: "Playing football was one of those things I never even thought was a possibility. I thought maybe I could help out with some equipment stuff or be an equipment manager. ... This is just unbelievable. It's really a dream come true."

Getting to know Corcoran: Favorite movie is "The Dark Knight Rises" ... Favorite TV show is "House" ... Favorite food is his mom's chili ("I smell it in the crockpot, and I could eat it all day every day. It tastes like home.") ... Favorite musician is Tim McGraw ... Favorite vacation spot is the Bahamas.
