PSU commits impress at The Opening
By Tom VanHaaren
BEAVERTON, Ore. -- Penn State has a pair of commitments participating in The Opening in four-star athletes Troy Vincent Jr. (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) and De'Andre Thompkins (Swansboro, N.C./Swansboro). The two future Nittany Lions are on opposite sides, but both have the opportunity to represent their future school.
Thompkins, who is No. 54 in the ESPN 300, impressed on the day and seemed to take well to the coaching given to him. The nation's No. 5 athlete put his talents on display, and it didn't go unnoticed.
The receivers went through routes and eventually went against the defensive backs in some 7-on-7 play. The NFTC style day gave the wideouts a chance to jell with the quarterbacks before the actual 7-on-7 tournament starts.
While there are some other prospects getting more attention, Thompkins might be a prospect to watch throughout the week.
Tom Luginbill's take: Thompkins is sleek and speedy, ultra smooth. He is still developing at wide receiver due to playing multiple positions, which has given him great value and also showcased his versatility.
