NittanyNation contacted several Penn State commitments for their thoughts on the 35-7 victory against Illinois.
Here’s what they had to say:
OT Andrew Nelson (Hershey, Pa./Hershey)
Four stars, No. 20 at position
"I think Penn State's definitely getting better every week. And if I can pick out one player, it would be Michael Mauti because he had an amazing game. And I just really respect that he stands up for what he believes in. And when Illinois was on campus trying to get all those players, I know Michael didn't really approve of that -- but he left it all on the field.
"To be honest, I think they could have beaten Ohio and Virginia because they're definitely getting better, and I think they'll be a force to be reckoned with later in the season."
TE Adam Breneman (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff)
Four stars, ESPN 150, No. 1 at position
"I'm impressed again with the offense and how well they are executing it. Coach [Bill] O'Brien is getting his playmakers the ball, and that's why they're winning. I get so excited watching the O and thinking about how much I can thrive in it.
"Three months until I'm there!"
OG Tanner Hartman (Lynchburg, Va./Liberty Christian)
Two stars, No. 102 at position
"You can definitely tell they're just getting better each and every week. And me being on the offensive line, just to see what they've been running, I really enjoy watching it. It's just the way they play; they were really getting the ball down the field and moving well and had some good drives.
"I kind of watch the offensive tackles closely, but I don't really know what exact position I'll be playing, so I try to pay attention to the whole line. But sometimes I get so caught up in the game that I forget."
OG Brendan Mahon (Randolph, N.J./Randolph)
Four stars, ESPN 150, No. 10 at position
"I thought it was a great victory over Illinois. You know, Mauti played a helluva game and really got fired up for his reasons. I felt it was great to watch everything come together.
"It was just a learning experience in the beginning, and everything's starting to come together, and we'll see where the future takes it. I think everyone's playing as a team and each week is an improvement. That's a big deal."
CB Jordan Smith (Washington, D.C./Howard D. Woodson)
Three stars, No. 59 at position
"The team played tremendous and outstanding. The defense once again looked great. Mauti -- you can't say enough about him causing turnovers and creating havoc. The offense was moving down the field, and they had ball possession.
"You can't put your finger on just one thing they did well. The intensity was high, they were physical and fast, and they did a number of things. I got very excited; I'm counting down my days to when I get up there."
