Montae Nicholson (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) reclined in a desk chair across from three other prospects when his mother's cell phone began buzzing during Penn State's junior day.

Nicholson's mother glanced at her phone, then at Nicholson and then at Penn State's coaches. And then she looked back at the phone. Nicholson knew what that meant. He stood up with a blank stare and unzipped his jacket. ("He looked like Superman," his assistant coach recalled.) The staff just burst out laughing; they knew that was the cue.
