Every weekday, as part of an ongoing series, NittanyNation will take a closer look at a Penn State walk-on.
Vitals: Running back Brian Tomasetti, Old Forge (Pa.), 6-foot-2, 180 pounds.
Picked Penn State over: Walk-on invitations from Rutgers and Delaware, along with several Div. II scholarships from the likes of Bloomsburg and Kutztown.
Why he picked PSU: He started going to games when he was 3 or 4 years old, so he said he fell in love with Happy Valley at an early age. He admires Bill O'Brien, liked the academics and thought the fact several coaches had an NFL pedigree was a big plus.
State of the position: PSU needs some more depth at tailback. There's currently just four scholarship players on the roster -- and the Nittany Lions were forced to turn to their fifth-string RB last season. Zach Zwinak will get the starting nod, while Bill Belton and Akeel Lynch will battle for carries. Early enrollee Richy Anderson could also be in the mix or could see time in the slot.
Strengths: He has good vision and displays good hands. Tomasetti could play wideout if the coaches want to try him elsewhere. His 40 time was also on par with some other PSU tailbacks, as he clocked a 4.6 at a combine.
Weaknesses: He needs to put some more weight on and hit the weight room to add strength. He also needs to stay a little low while running; admitted he sometimes tended to run a little too upright.
Potential impact: He's a little tall for a tailback, but he could still see some time down the road. He fits O'Brien's style of offense, and the Nittany Lions have shown they don't mind playing some run-ons here (i.e. -- Derek Day). He could see situational time as an upperclassman, but he'll be on the scout team until he adds weight/strength.
Quotables: "From the first time I went to a game, it was unbelievable. I loved every second of it. I loved the campus; I loved everything about Penn State. I love the pride about Penn State."
Getting to know Tomasetti: Favorite movie is "Friday Night Lights" ... Favorite TV show is "The Walking Dead" ... Favorite food is steak ("Everywhere I go, I just order that. I love steak.") ... Favorite musician is Meek Mill ... Dream vacation spot is Spain.
