Every weekday until signing day, NittanyNation will break down a commitment from Penn State’s 2013 recruiting class.
Vitals: Running back Richy Anderson, Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson, 5-foot-10, 180 pounds
Committed: Oct. 28, 2012
ESPN.com grade: 77. Three-star prospect.
ESPN.com rankings: No. 50 at position, No. 86 in region, No. 17 in state.
Picked Penn State over: Boston College, Illinois, Maryland, Rutgers and others.
State of the position: Zach Zwinak has solidified his job as the starter. The only question now is who will see more carries as the No. 2 -- rising junior Bill Belton or rising redshirt freshman Akeel Lynch.
Pros: "This guy is quick off the mark, showing the vision needed to locate and get to creases in a hurry; displays the agility and balance needed to cut back against the grain and get to the second level in a hurry; his lateral quickness and balance allow him to shake defenders and get into space for additional yardage." -- ESPN scouting report
Cons: "This back has smooth, steady speed but lacks a big time second gear. ... Anderson does not appear to be an immediate starter at the BCS level of play." -- ESPN scouting report
Similar to/potential role: Anderson displays good hands and his playing style is somewhat similar to Belton. He could line up in the slot but, barring injuries, he'll likely redshirt this season.
Expected impact: 2015. Both Belton and Zwinak will be graduated by then, so Anderson will have the opportunity to make a big move as a redshirt sophomore. Sure, he'll have to unseat Lynch -- but, at the very least, he should see considerable time as a backup.
