2014 ATH Thompkins adds PSU offer

11/1/2012

2014 athlete DeAndre Thompkins (Swansboro, N.C./Swansboro) added his third FBS offer Thursday when Penn State's staff called him at school to tell him the news.

The 6-foot, 170-pound prospect has already made plans to visit the Penn State-Wisconsin game on Nov. 24.

"He's like a video game," his coach, Tim Laspada, said. "He runs a high 4.3 or a low 4.4. He's returned 11 kickoffs and he has five returned touchdowns -- so people stopped kicking to him."

Swansboro boasts just a 4-7 record this season, so Lapsada plugged in the junior at tailback -- where he could touch the ball often.

"He's really a receiver playing running back," the coach added.

Defensive coordinator Ted Roof told Lapsada he's interested in the prospect as a wideout, kickoff returner and -- depending how quickly he catches on -- also as a player who could play in nickel packages.

Thompkins holds offers from NC State and North Carolina, and South Carolina plans to stop by the school Friday.

"People ask me if he's a track guy playing football," Lapsada said. "And he's not. He's a football player who does track. ... They clocked him at Carolina at a 4.41, and I think he was a little bit nervous there. I've clocked him at 4.38."

Swansboro has quite a few connections to Penn State. The basketball coach is an alum, a counselor at University Park used to work at Swansboro's middle school, and Lapsada grew up in New Jersey as a huge Penn State fan.

Lapsada will be in attendance Nov. 24 along with Thompkins. It will be their first-ever visit to Happy Valley.

"He's bringing his mom and his granddad, and he's really pumped right now," Thompkins said. "When Coach Roof called him today, he was just super excited.

"He watched the game against Ohio State, and he was just amazed with the crowd."
