I present to you a “Did You Know?” haiku for your Friday enjoyment:
Here, facts a plenty
‘Round the Big Ten and football
You’ll be smart’r for it
Braxton who? Fifth-year senior quarterback Kenny Guiton, whose three touchdowns in the first six minutes against Cal is impressive enough, led the Buckeyes to an offensive outpouring of 608 yards of total offense -- the most for any OSU team under coach Urban Meyer. And if that weren’t enough, Guiton also accounted for a school record. His 90-yard TD pass to Devin Smith was the longest in program history.
The Huskies don’t exactly have the fondest of memories from the last time they played Michigan. In the 2010 season opener, the Wolverines started a little-known QB by the name of Denard Robinson. The then-sophomore rushed for 197 yards and passed for 186 yards to lead Michigan to a 30-10 victory over UConn.
Wisconsin’s controversial loss to Arizona State last weekend was a bit of a heartbreaker, but Badgers fans are accustomed to close losses. Wisconsin hasn’t lost a game by more than 10 points in its last 51 games (last 10-plus point loss was Oct. 10, 2009 to Ohio State, 31-13). And since the start of the 2010 season, the Badgers are the only Big Ten team to not lose a game by more than 14 points. Ohio State, coming in second, has only lost one conference game by 14 or more points.
Reaching back to last season, Northwestern has scored at least 30 points in the last five games. This season the Wildcats have scored 44 against California, 48 against Syracuse and 38 against Western Michigan. The last time Northwestern started the season with three consecutive 30-plus point games was in 1962.
Michigan State has faced Notre Dame 77 times. The Irish lead the series, 47-28-1, however, the Spartans’ 28 wins over Notre Dame are the second most for any team against the Irish. Only USC has more wins over Notre Dame (35).
Nebraska heads into this weekend’s game vs. South Dakota State as a perfect 9-0 (since 1992) against FCS schools. On average the Cornhuskers have defeated each FCS school by a margin of 38.5 points, however, the closest FCS game in that history was against South Dakota State. In 2010 Nebraska played South Dakota State and defeated them by just 14 points, 17-3.
Minnesota redshirt sophomore defensive lineman Theiren Cockran leads the Big Ten in sacks (three) and is tied for No. 1 in tackles for a loss (five). He’s a player that some Big Ten opponents will have to know. And if you want to know, it’s pronounced “Thee-air-en.”
Penn State holds an all-time 38-18 record against schools from Ohio, so history doesn’t exactly help Kent State’s case. The Nittany Lions hold undefeated records against Kent State (3-0), Akron (4-0), Bowling Green (2-0), Oberlin (1-0) and Youngstown State (1-0). They’re 8-1 against Cincinnati and hold losing records to both Toledo (0-1) and Ohio State (13-15).
Illinois might not be the best team in the conference, but it is the best in the conference at drawing penalties. Through three games, Illini opponents have accounted for a conference high of 25 penalties (208 yards). Purdue, on the other hand, is the worst at having penalties called. The Boilermakers have had just eight (58 yards) called through three games.
Last weekend might’ve been exciting as four Big Ten teams took on PAC-12 foes, but this weekend when Indiana and Missouri take the field, it will mark the only Big Ten-SEC match up of the regular season. It should be an interesting match up as both feature high-powered offenses, though in comparison, Missouri’s isn’t huge in the SEC. Indiana has averaged 571 yards per game, which is best in the Big Ten. Missouri, which has averaged 539 -- just 32 yards per game less than the Hoosiers -- is 13th in the SEC.
Iowa running back Mark Weisman leads the nation with 85 carries this season. In the Big Ten, the next closest rusher -- in terms of carries -- is Ohio State’s Jordan Hall (64). Weisman's 425 yards this season, however, are second in the Big Ten to Wisconsin RB Melvin Gordon, who is also the only running back in the conference, other than Weisman, to post three 100-yard games.
Purdue might be 0-3 this season, but if games were only 15 minutes long, it might not be a bad game pick. The Boilermakers haven’t allowed a first-quarter score yet. In their first quarters, the Boilermakers held Cincinnati to 56 yards, Indiana State to 48 yards and Notre Dame to just 29 yards.
