It's roughly seven weeks until national signing day.

Ohio State’s recruiting class of 2013 has strangleholds defensively on the line and in the secondary. But there are still things the Buckeyes must learn on the fly.

With that in mind, here are five things the squad will probably need to be shored up or at least plugged up a bit in terms of the 2013 season.

WR Verlon Reed leaves the Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The search for more playmakers at wide receiver is ongoing, but it won't include Verlon Reed when Ohio State gets back on the field during spring practice.

After playing sparingly on offense as a redshirt sophomore last season, Reed and the Buckeyes mutually agreed to part ways over the weekend, a school spokesman confirmed on Monday morning.

Reed had a 13-yard reception in the opening win over Miami (Ohio) in September, but he didn't make another for the rest of the season and couldn't sneak into a rotation that was looking for more contributors to consistently complement Corey Brown and Devin Smith in the passing attack. A talented two-way player out of nearby Marion-Franklin High School, Reed appeared in eight games for the undefeated Buckeyes and also contributed a tackle on special teams.

Reed wasn't listed on the final depth chart of the season ahead of the rivalry game against Michigan, leaving the position battles heading into spring essentially the same as they already were. The Buckeyes are only replacing one receiver on the two-deep, departing senior Jake Stoneburner.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Ohio State will be short one more veteran defensive starter than expected.

Already with a hole to fill at linebacker after losing Etienne Sabino to a broken bone in his leg, the Buckeyes will be without another senior on the defensive line thanks to a concussion for Nathan Williams.

According to a school spokesman, Williams didn't travel with the team and also didn't work in practice all week as the Buckeyes prepared for tonight's visit to Indiana.

The pass rush had been strengthened over the last couple games as Williams chipped off some remaining rust after last year's microfracture knee surgery, with bookend John Simon also shaking off nagging injuries. But to keep that momentum rolling, Ohio State likely will need another recovering lineman to chip in along with a true freshman -- Michael Bennett or Noah Spence, respectively.

Other updates from Ohio State:
  • Najee Murray: The freshman defensive back and special teams contributor is out for the season after having knee surgery to repair his anterior cruciate ligament.
  • Armani Reeves: Another freshman in the secondary and on special teams didn't travel due to a health concern, with Reeves dealing with an ankle sprain.
  • Verlon Reed: The wide receiver changed numbers and will wear No. 8 moving forward.
