The writers at WolverineNation and BuckeyeNation put their heads together to break down the rivals' 2013 classes. They'll give readers a position-by-position look at who coaches Brady Hoke and Urban Meyer brought in and, ultimately, which class edged out the other. It's too early to say what will happen through the next few seasons, and we won't make any promises except that Hoke and Meyer are going to put talent on the field.

Ohio State 2013: Needs versus wants

It’s the dead period in college football recruiting, which means coaches can still call players once a week, but they can not make on- or off-campus contact with non mid-year enrollees.

With that said, the Buckeyes can probably take four or five more players in the Class of 2013 depending on medical hardships, players transferring or leaving early for the NFL draft.

Here’s a position by position look at what the Buckeyes want vs. what they need.

One Ohio State commit ended his career the best way possible, while another finished in heartbreak. Joey Bosa (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) won a state title. J.T. Barrett (Wichita Falls, Texas/Rider), who is on the mend with a torn ACL and meniscus, lost in double overtime.

Bosa recorded four sacks and added three tackles for loss in a 41-25 Class 7A championship win over Tallahassee Lincoln. Lincoln, incidentally, was led defensively by Buckeyes target and Florida commit James Hearns.

The game was rarely in doubt as the Raiders overcame a six-point deficit and built a 21-6 lead after the first quarter.

Two Ohio State pledges that go to a school with the Raiders nickname headed into high playoff action over the weekend, both lived another week.

Joey Bosa (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) brought his Raiders in as underdogs against Manatee -- the nation’s No. 1 team in the ESPN 25 Power Rankings -- and walked away a 35-18 winner in a Florida 7A semifinal playoff game.

They'll play Tallahassee Lincoln next week in a state final. Lincoln happens to be the team of Buckeyes target James Hearns, a Florida pledge.

Jayme Thompson’s statistics weren’t that impressive on paper, but it can be argued the Toledo (Ohio) Central Catholic safety is the reason the Fighting Irish beat Trotwood-Madison 16-12 in the Division II state championship.

His tackle on a fourth-and-2 call in the second quarter set up Central Catholic for a touchdown to make it a 14-point contest.

He was also part of a defense that held the Rams to 227 yards total offense.

Trey JohnsonZach Perry/Intersport ESPN 150 linebacker Trey Johnson, an Auburn pledge, is among a parade of big-time recruits who will be attending the Michigan-Ohio State game on Saturday.
The laundry list of players scheduled to visit The Horseshoe this weekend is a virtual who’s who among the top recruits in the nation.

In fact, it would have been even stronger if some individuals weren’t still in their respective high school playoffs.

Still, with names such as ESPN 150 linebackers Daniel McMillian and Trey Johnson, and wide receiver James Quick scheduled to make official visits, it’s an impressive collection.

Johnny Townsend (Orlando, Fla./Boone) is more than just a punter. While his 58-yard boot turned into a muffed punt that Boone recovered inside the 10, the Ohio State commit also recorded a sack and five tackles from his safety position. It led to a playoff-clinching 35-7 win over Cypress Creek.

Here’s how the other 16 Buckeyes commits fared over the weekend:

J.T. Barrett: Rider (Texas) quarterback is out for season with torn ACL and meniscus. Team still beat Denton 40-7.
