Ohio State Buckeyes: Cameron Hunt

If fans don’t have a seatbelt, they’ll likely fall out of the rollercoaster, especially when it comes to recruiting and following the ebb and flow of the wild ride.

One second it might look like Ohio State is onto something, and the next second it all falls apart.

There have been far more hits than misses for the Buckeyes in the recruiting class of 2013. That said, there have been some low points as well. Here’s a look back at five things Ohio State fans would rather forget from the past year.

Where Ohio State targets could land

The last 48 hours have been interesting.

Ohio State target Dan Skipper flipped from Tennessee to Arkansas and Ryan Timmons said he wouldn’t be coming to Columbus, Ohio, to make another unofficial visit.

Such is the life of recruiting with national signing day in sight.

With that in mind, Midwest recruiting analyst Jared Shanker teamed up with BuckeyeNation to look at what’s on the board for Ohio State and where we think they’ll wind up on Feb. 6.

Vonn Bell (Rossville, Ga./Ridgeland): The 6-foot, 190-pound safety just finished a whirlwind of weekends where he took official visits to Alabama, Ohio State and Tennessee.

Bournival’s pick: Tennessee

Shanker’s pick: Alabama

Darren Carrington (San Diego/Horizon): The 6-3, 184-pound wide receiver is an Oregon commit and is considering Arizona, Arizona State, Ohio State and Oregon State.

Bournival: Oregon

Shanker: Oregon

James Clark (New Smyrna Beach, Fla./New Smyrna Beach): The 5-11, 175-pound Clark just came off an official visit to Ohio State and will take an unofficial look at Florida over the weekend. He also has Clemson, Northwestern and Nebraska in his sights.

Bournival: Ohio State

Shanker: Florida

A WR could go a long way for OSU

Two weekends ago, it looked like Ohio State might get the chance to lock up a wide receiver.

Corey Smith (Akron, Ohio/East Mississippi CC), Cornelius Elder (Nashville, Tenn./Ensworth) and Shelton Gibson (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) were on campus on official visits.

Ryan Timmons (Frankfort, Ky./Franklin County) was scheduled to come as well, but backed out at the last moment. Incidentally, Timmons picked up an offer from the Buckeyes on Tuesday night so that could change things again.

Smith is a Mississippi State commitment, but still loves the Ohio State. Elder has the Buckeyes and UCLA in his final two. Gibson has committed to West Virginia.

Travis L. Brown/ESPNDallas.com Getting Dontre Wilson to flip his commitment from Oregon to OSU could pay dividends for other recruits on the Buckeyes' board.
While Timmons is still in play -- Ohio State visited him Tuesday -- Oregon commit Dontre Wilson (DeSoto, Texas/DeSoto) is scheduled to come to town this weekend.

Incidentally, James Clark (New Smyrna Beach, Fla./New Smyrna Beach) could be a late add to this weekend’s official visit list as well. He has an in-home visit with the Buckeyes tonight.

The following weekend another Duck, this one -- Darren Carrington (San Diego/Horizon) -- has an official visit lined up as well.

Tyree Robinson (San Diego/Lincoln) and his twin brother Tyrell Robinson were scheduled to make an official visit this weekend, but have parted ways with Ohio State.

If they can lock up Wilson it might push things along in the process with others.

Wilson likes Oregon’s promotion of former offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich, but still wants to look around. He has always liked the Buckeyes, so a complete sell job could be the difference.

A wide receiver commitment could also hurry the process along a bit for other targets.

With Urban Meyer and Co. filling up another spot in a class with so few precious ones remaining, a commitment from a lineman like Dan Skipper (Arvada, Col./Ralston Valley) or Cameron Hunt (Corona, Calif./Centennial) could come sooner rather than later.

It won’t likely affect ESPN 150 safety Vonn Bell (Rossville, Ga./Ridgeland), who will wait until signing day, but maybe it brings one of the aforementioned receivers to Columbus, Ohio.

Either way, a pledge this weekend should get the ball rolling. Otherwise, expect an insanely hectic final week for the Buckeyes as they wrap up their 2013 recruiting class.

Team needs: Ohio State needs a defensive front seven to jell quickly in 2013. The only returning starter from last year’s front seven is Ryan Shazier, and while he’s a great one, he needs some help.

Scott Fink for ESPN.comFive-star cornerback Eli Apple is already enrolled at Ohio State.
The secondary is strong with every player returning, but the defensive line will be incredibly young this season. There’s also a need for a wide receiver. That’s more a numbers game, however.

Help is on the way: Urban Meyer hasn’t messed around in trying to fix the problem. His two-deep chart on defense last season included freshmen Adolphus Washington, Tommy Schutt, Connor Crowell, Camren Williams and Joshua Perry, and Crowell is leaving the program because of medical issues. This year, he has six defensive linemen coming in and another three linebackers.

Trying to keep up this week with Ohio State’s recruitment was a 24-hour-a-day job as the Buckeyes looked to wrap up the 2013 class, while keeping an eye on the future.

On Sunday, Ohio State target James Clark talked about his official visit to Clemson and said he’s likely not coming to Ohio State and then changed his mind a bit.

ESPN 300 offensive guard Cameron Hunt gave the Buckeyes an idea of where he sits in the recruitment race.

With Ohio State’s wide receiver outlook still up in the air for the Class of 2013, coming into town on an official visit Saturday is an offensive tackle who could calm the nerves of those worried about the trenches.

Cameron Hunt (Corona, Calif./Centennial) came in last weekend after an official visit to Michigan, but left without a commitment.

Now, it’s Dan Skipper’s turn.

With national signing day sitting three weeks away, it has become abundantly clear there are two positions Ohio State needs shore up in order to finish an already-strong class -- offensive line and wide receiver.

With that in mind, here are the seven names most likely left on the board for the Buckeyes, with a synopsis of what is going on with each:

Ohio State’s battle with Michigan doesn’t just happen on the football field. It’s a 365-day war.

Especially when it comes to recruiting.

The Wolverines blew out of the gate with the No. 1 class in the nation in June thanks in large part to a February weekend when seven recruits committed.

A look at Ohio State’s recruiting weekend revealed a few things: The Buckeyes still want a wide receiver and are still in the hunt for an offensive lineman.

As it sits right now, Ohio State is full as far as the 82 scholarships are concerned. That said, transfers will undoubtedly open things right back up.

Urban Meyer likes home cooking

Click, clack.

Judging from his first two recruiting classes, Ohio State coach Urban Meyer could certainly be cast in the next Under Armour commercial.

With three weeks left before signing day, a look at the numbers shows the two-time national champion does indeed protect his house.

While everyone is talking about all the 14 Georgians from 2014 Meyer has offered and looking at his national presence, the Ohio native really does stay at home for the most part.

At least that’s the consensus through the first 47 signings/commitments from the two Buckeyes classes under Meyer’s watch.

One wild Ohio State recruiting week

Ohio State’s linebacker situation regarding the class of 2013 is no longer an issue. The defensive backfield received a nice pickup as well from the class of 2014.

When outside linebacker Christopher Worley gave his yes to the school on Friday during an official visit, and cornerback Damon Webb did the same Sunday on an unofficial one, many questions were answered.

Vonn Bell didn’t walk away with a commitment, but the news coming out of Columbus, Ohio wasn’t bad as the ESPN 150 safety really liked his visit and has the Buckeyes still in the mix.

Ohio State’s big recruiting weekend began with Christopher Worley (Cleveland/Glenville) literally stepping on campus and committing to the Buckeyes.

It ended with Damon Webb (Detroit/Cass Tech) becoming the second commitment from the class of 2014.

What it did more than anything, however, was answer some lingering questions.
