WRs focus of Ohio State visitors weekend

By Brad Bournival

Last weekend, the stars came out to see Ohio State.

One ESPN Watch List junior after another watched the Buckeyes practice and the scarlet and gray picked up linebacker commitments from Sam Hubbard (Cincinnati/Moeller) and Kyle Berger (Cleveland/St. Ignatius).

While the list isn’t as strong for the spring game in Cincinnati’s Paul Brown Stadium on Saturday, there are still some big names on their way.

Signees from the 2013 class include defensive tackles Joey Bosa (Ft. Lauderdale, St. Thomas Aquinas) and Donovan Munger (Shaker Heights, Ohio) and safety Vonn Bell (Rossville, Ga./Ridgeland). Commitments from the 2014 class will be there, as well as offensive tackles Kyle Trout (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) and Marcelys Jones (Cleveland/Glenville) join defensive end Dylan Thompson (Lombard, Ill./Montini Catholic) in the Queen City.

Of the uncommitted athletes, the biggest names coming are a trio of wide receivers in Lonnie Johnson (Gary, Ind./West Side), Derek Kief (Cincinnati/La Salle) and Austin Roberts (Carmel, Ind./Carmel).

A complete list can be found here, but in the meantime here’s a look at the three biggest names on their way to the spring game. All have offers.

Lonnie Johnson

Offers: Bowling Green, Illinois, Kentucky, Nebraska, Ohio State and Purdue

Outlook: The 6-foot-2, 180-pound Johnson looked like he was going to commit when he picked up his Ohio State offer in December, but backed off an announcement. After having to scratch visit plans late last week, Johnson will watch the Buckeyes in action. He’s bringing the family to see the Ohio State spring game this time.

Derek Kief

Offers: Alabama, Arkansas, Boston College, Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Illinois, Indiana, Kent State, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Northwestern, Ohio State, Toledo, Vanderbilt, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

Outlook: This will be the second visit in two weeks for the 6-5, 180-pound Kief. A commitment isn’t expected, but the Buckeyes are certainly making a push for the ESPN Watch List junior, who has seen his recruiting blow up this spring.

Austin Roberts

Offers: Alabama, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Miami (Fla.), Michigan State, Nebraska, North Carolina State, Northwestern, Ohio State, Purdue, Stanford and Virginia Tech

Outlook: The Watch List junior has visited Florida and Miami (Fla.) and is hoping to get out to Alabama as well. The son of a father with two Super Bowl rings and two NCAA national championships, the 6-2, 208-pound Roberts wants to trim his list down before the fall.
