New name pops up in OSU QB search

By Brad Bournival

Super Bowl winner and former Pro Bowl selection Trent Dilfer told Brandon Harris (Bossier City, La./Parkway) he has the strongest arm in high school.

Ohio State has taken notice.

Brandon Harris
Bossier City, La., prospect Brandon Harris is in the mix to become the second 2014 quarterback with an offer from Ohio State.
One of the fastest rising junior quarterbacks in the nation, the 6-foot-1, 186-pound Harris likes to hear that and already has set aside time for the Buckeyes, who plan on visiting him later this month or in early May. Harris also is making plans for a trip up to Columbus, Ohio, in the summer for one of Ohio State’s camps to further prove his worth.

While that says a lot about his interest in the Buckeyes, the fact Urban Meyer is even looking at him has gone a long way for Harris, as well.

“It means a lot,” he said. “Coach Meyer’s name and resume speak for themselves. He’s a big-time guy at a big-time program, and he’s won at the highest level.

“He had Tim Tebow and recruited one of my favorite players in Cam Newton. He means a lot.”

Speaking of resumes, Harris’ isn’t too shabby. The Panthers advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time since 1994 last season, his first as a starter. He threw for 2,673 yards and 26 touchdowns and ran for 677 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Those numbers are strong enough to get looks, but so is the fact he has lost just one game as a starter and has run a laser-timed 40-yard dash in 4.5.

When the Buckeyes make the trip for the individual workout, Harris is confident he’ll do well.

In fact, he’s hoping he can join Deshaun Watson (Gainesville, Ga./Gainesville) as the only other quarterback from the Class of 2014 with an offer from the Buckeyes.

“I want to show them the arm God blessed me with, as well as my athleticism,” Harris said. “They like my ability to make plays. That’s what stands out. I’ll know more when they get to know me in the spring.”

As of now, Arizona State, Arkansas, Houston, Indiana, Louisiana Tech, McNeese State, Nebraska, North Carolina and Tennessee have offered Harris.

He also has interest from Alabama, LSU, Mississippi State and Texas A&M.
