Kief learns Ohio State is a good fit

By Brad Bournival

Visit No. 5 was special to Derek Kief (Cincinnati/La Salle).

He’s seen a spring practice before. In fact, he knows quite a bit about Ohio State, having seen the Buckeyes play three times last season during unofficial visits.

But this unofficial visit came for the first time as someone offered by Ohio State.

The 6-foot-5, 180-pound wide receiver chased an offer from the school for the better part of his playing career and now has one.

“There was a lot more personal attention,” Kief said after his two-day trip. “I was looking into things more because now there’s a potential to go there.

“I stayed overnight, so I learned I could fit in with the players. I learned they have a nice campus and their academic standards are awesome. I learned I could fit.”

Kief spent a majority of time with defensive back Najee Murray and learned the ins and outs of the university.

The trip was more about going behind-the-scenes and seeing just what the Buckeyes had to offer. It was also a chance to compare Ohio State to Alabama, where he was a week ago.

“It compared pretty good,” Kief said. “They have different things to offer, but then again some of the same things. They’re both very intense. They’ll contend for national championships. It’s just the way they go about things. They’re both good, but it’s about what fits the player.”

Kief isn’t closer to a commitment and has more trips on slate, though nothing is set in stone.

Coming off a season where he logged 65 receptions for 907 yards and scored nine touchdowns in 10 games last season, Kief has blown up on the recruiting scene.

He has offers from Alabama, Arkansas, Boston College, Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Illinois, Indiana, Kent State, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Northwestern, Ohio State, Toledo, Vanderbilt, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

Kief also has interest from Michigan, Notre Dame and Pittsburgh.
