Ohio State 2014 Spotlight: CB Brown

By Brad Bournival

Throughout the next few months, BuckeyeNation will look deeper into those juniors offered by Ohio State.

We’ll give as much detail as we can and go behind the scenes to see why these class of 2014 standouts are so attractive to the Buckeyes.

Next on the list of cornerbacks is Tony Brown, who has over 20 offers, including one from the Buckeyes.

Vitals: Brown (Beaumont, Texas/Ozen) is 6-foot and 179 pounds.

Status: He’s uncommitted and looking forward to a summer visit to Ohio State. The Buckeyes offered Brown on July 8.

ESPN.com ranking: He’s an ESPN Watch List cornerback who very well could land in the top five at his position should he continue his strong play from a successful junior season.

Numbers game: Teams know to stay away from Brown now after he notched 90-plus tackles in both his freshman and sophomore seasons and record a combined 30 pass breakups. Last season, he recorded 46 tackles, forced four fumbles and had an interception for the Panthers.

State of the position: The position is loaded, but will likely lose a big cornerback should Bradley Roby leave for the NFL following the 2013 season. Still, the secondary moving forward looks good after a 2013 class that hauled in ESPN 150 cornerbacks Eli Apple, Gareon Conley and Cam Burrows. Add Doran Grant, Adam Griffin, Devan Bogard, Armani Reeves and Tyvis Powell to the position and it’s one of strength for the Buckeyes.

What has caught Ohio State’s eye: He’s a pass break-up specialist that can handle the high pressure of one-on-one coverage out on the edge. Because of his size, he can play any position in the secondary and is a very good against the run. With speed to burn, he has shown the ability to shut down the best wide receivers Texas has to offer. He’s the epitome of what college coaches look for at the position.

What he has said about the Buckeyes: “It means a lot that a school that is that good with great players is looking at me. I’m honored to have gotten an offer so early from them.”
