It's Lone Star love for Urban Meyer
By Brad Bournival
The Lone Star state is a five-star state, especially when it comes to recruiting and Urban Meyer at Ohio State.
While much is being made of the two-time national champion coach's love for Georgia athletes, Texas is one of the top three recruiting states in the nation, and Meyer knows it.
The Peach State might have 15 offers alone in the class of 2014 from Meyer, but Texas isn’t far behind.
Meyer came on in late November of 2011 with the 2012 recruiting class having only two prospects out of Texas with offers -- cornerback De'Vante Harris (Mesquite/Horn) and inside linebacker Derek David (Rockdale/Rockdale).
J.T. Barrett is one of two Texas prospects already committed to Ohio State for the Class of 2013.
In the last one-plus years, that number has increased 11 times over.
The 2013 class already has commits in quarterback J.T. Barrett (Wichita Falls/Rider) and outside linebacker Mike Mitchell (Plano/Prestonwood Christian). Barrett, in fact, already is enrolled at Ohio State.
Meyer has offered 11 Texans in the class of 2013 and another 11 in the class of 2014.
He might not be done picking up senior commitments, as he’s after Dontre Wilson (DeSoto/DeSoto). The Oregon commitment took an official visit to Columbus, Ohio, last weekend and is now said to be 50/50 on staying with the Ducks.
Meyer is not just going after your average Texas recruit, either. He has offered six ESPN 150 prospects and another three ESPN 300 targets.
When fans turn to the class of 2014 they’ll find only one name -- safety John Bonney (Houston/Lamar) -- that isn’t a Watch List junior, and he very well might be a 150/300 athlete when the first rankings come out for next year’s seniors.
Bonney counts 12 offers to his name already, including the likes of Auburn, Baylor, Cincinnati, LSU, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and UCLA.
Here’s a breakdown of Texans offered by the Buckeyes since Meyer has been at the helm.
CB De'Vante Harris (Mesquite/Horn)
ILB Derek David (Rockdale/Rockdale)
Flipping Dontre Wilson from Oregon would be quite a coup for Urban Meyer.
