Breakdown: Ohio State's Glenville 18
By Brad Bournival
If Christopher Worley signs with Ohio State in two weeks and junior pledge Marcelys Jones does the same on Feb. 5, 2014, they’ll become the 19th and 20th players from Cleveland Glenville to do so since 2002.
It’s a talented pipeline that really began to gush with quarterback Troy Smith. It includes a few misses, but many hits as Ted Ginn Jr. and Donte Whitner will represent the city and Ohio State in Super Bowl XLVII on Feb. 3 as members of the San Francisco 49ers.
Smith, of course, was the 2006 Heisman Trophy winner. Here’s a look at the 18 Glenville Tarblooders who have signed with the Buckeyes since 2002:
QB Troy Smith (2002): Now out of the NFL, Smith threw for 5,720 yards and 54 touchdowns, while rushing for another 1,168 and 14 more scores for Ohio State.
CB Dareus Hiley (2003): Academic issues knocked Hiley out of Ohio State after just one season.
CB Donte Whitner (2003): In three seasons with the Buckeyes, he recorded 73 tackles, five interceptions and four sacks. He is currently starting at strong safety for the 49ers.
LB Curtis Terry (2004): In three seasons, he recorded 25 tackles -- 5½ for loss. He played linebacker, fullback and defensive end for Ohio State.
Cleveland Glenville graduate Ted Ginn Jr. starred for the Buckeyes and will play for the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII on Feb. 3.
CB Ted Ginn Jr. (2004): Many forget he was recruited on defense. Ginn had 1,943 yards receiving, 213 yards, returned punts and kicks for 1,912 yards and scored 26 total touchdowns for the Buckeyes. He’s a first-teamer on punt and kick returns for the 49ers.
LB Freddie Lenix (2005): A grayshirt for the Buckeyes, Lenix eventually transferred to Cincinnati.
CB Jamario O’Neal (2005): He recorded 49 tackles for the Buckeyes and intercepted one pass. He also had three kick returns for 58 yards.
CB Ray Small (2006): Small made it on offense, logging 659 yards receiving, 88 yards rushing and 1,505 yards in returns. He also scored five touchdowns.
OL Bryant Browning (2006): A three-year starter for the Buckeyes, he was a four-time academic All-Big Ten choice. The guard has bounced around in the NFL.
DE Robert Rose (2006): He played two seasons for the Buckeyes, recording 11 tackles, five sacks and one pass deflection. He was on the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad for part of the 2012 season.
LB Jermale Hines (2007): He recorded 157 tackles, 1½ sacks, 11 pass deflections, a fumble recovery and scored two defensive touchdowns.
FB Jermil Martin (2008): He carried the ball 11 times for 94 yards and scored a touchdown, but left school before 2010.
DT Shawntell Rowell (2008): He was never able to enroll because of academic issues.
OT Marcus Hall (2009): The starting right guard for Ohio State, he'll be a senior this fall.
DE Jonathan Newsome (2009): Recorded 20 tackles in two seasons for Ohio State before transferring to Ball State.
CB Christian Bryant (2010): A starting safety, he has made 146 tackles in three seasons with the Buckeyes. He also has a fumble recovery and an interception and has forced three fumbles.
QB Cardale Jones (2012): An initial 2011 pledge, he grayshirted before coming to Ohio State and was a backup quarterback last season.
S De’van Bogard (2012): A special teams contributor this season, he made three tackles, but was lost for the last part of the year with a torn ACL.
