Juco WR impressed by Ohio State visit
By Brad Bournival
Ohio State walked away from a big recruiting weekend without a wide receiver to add to the class of 2013.
That doesn’t mean the Buckeyes didn’t leave a lasting mark on those who were there.
Especially Corey Smith (Akron, Ohio/East Mississippi Community College), who has been an Ohio State fan for a long time.
The junior college standout was on campus and walked away impressed.
“He liked it,” said his mother, Ericka Smith. “I really believe he liked it. Two of his friends are there (Doran Grant and Devin Smith). He’s just so undecided. The next step is to visit the other three he has to visit and then make his decision.
“He’s got Tennessee to visit. He’s got Cincinnati to visit and he’s got Ole Miss. I don’t exactly know the dates, but I know two will be the end of this month and one will be the first week in February. He’s still planning the dates. He’s just thinking about things right now”
A Mississippi State commit, Smith is also sitting down and doing some number-crunching before ultimately signing somewhere on Feb. 6.
While he’s still committed to the Bulldogs, Ohio State is in the mix along with the aforementioned other schools.
If Smith decides to join the Buckeyes, he will have three years to play two seasons.
This season, Smith led East Mississippi C.C. in every statistical category when he made 51 catches for 733 yards and scored nine touchdowns. His touchdowns ranked 11th in the nation for the junior college circuit, and his receptions (15th) and yards (18th) were in the top 20 as well.
Smith currently has offers from Akron, Alabama, Arkansas, Ball State, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Miami (Fla.), Mississippi State, North Carolina, Ole Miss, Ohio State, Penn State, Tennessee, Texas, Toledo and Vanderbilt.
