LB Martrell Spaight to visit OSU, WVU

By Damon Sayles

Martrell Spaight (Coffeyville, Kan./Coffeyville Community College) finished his sophomore season with 130 tackles, seven sacks, three pass breakups and a blocked kick -- and he did all that in only nine games.

It was Spaight’s all-in play that made him the Jayhawk Conference Defensive Player of the Year. Spaight’s 130 tackles ranks him fourth on the school’s all-time list for single-season performances.

Now, it’s time for the former North Little Rock (Ark.) standout to look at FBS programs. Spaight will visit Ohio State this weekend and has a visit set for West Virginia the weekend of Dec. 8.

“I want to go wherever is the best fit,” said Spaight, who has offers from Minnesota, Indiana, Rutgers, Arkansas State, South Florida and Memphis. “I’m pretty much going to play this thing out.”

Spaight doesn’t have offers from Ohio State or West Virginia, but having official visits to both schools bodes well for the 6-foot, 220-pound linebacker who can play both outside and inside positions. Spaight said he also has received interest from Texas A&M.

His focus for now is Ohio State. Spaight said he has heard mostly from director of player personnel Mark Pantoni, and he’s excited about his trip to Columbus, Ohio.

“Quite frankly, I just want to get a big feel for big, Division I college life,” Spaight said. “Me coming from a junior college, I don’t really know what to expect on game day and how the community treats the players. I’m looking for the experience and to see the atmosphere.”

Spaight was a first team NJCAA All-American last season. He is expected to be an All-American this season, as well. He helped Coffeyville finish 6-4 overall and place third in the Jayhawk Conference.
