Ohio State offers 2014 LB Kyle Berger

By Brad Bournival

Urban Meyer’s quest for a big-time linebacker in the Class of 2014 continued this week when Ohio State offered a big name from a big program.

Kyle Berger (Cleveland/St. Ignatius) picked up his first offer, but the 6-foot-3, 205-pound outside linebacker will likely get plenty more after a junior season that put the Wildcats in the Division I state quarterfinals.

“It’s awesome just thinking you’re possibly going to be playing football in college and it’s possibly going to be for a school like Ohio State,” Berger said. “It’s always been my goal to play Division I football.”

His goal could become a reality as Berger’s numbers were impressive on a team already loaded with several top defensive prospects. His 90 tackles -- 39 for loss -- and 8½ sacks stick out almost as much as his desire.

That his first offer was from Ohio State went even further.

“It’s really big, especially growing up in Ohio, especially because my family loves the Buckeyes,” Berger said. “They said they love my size. They like my speed and my athleticism.”

Berger also has interest from Cincinnati, Georgia Tech, Iowa, Michigan and Stanford. He becomes the ninth linebacker from the Class of 2014 to be offered a scholarship and will be in Columbus this weekend for the Michigan game.
