Loss brings unofficial OSU visit for Byrne

By Brad Bournival

One team’s loss is another’s gain.

Jimmy Byrne
Watch List OT Jimmy Byrne will be able to attend Saturday's Ohio State-Michigan game, but it's bittersweet because his high school team lost in the playoffs.
When Cleveland St. Ignatius lost a Division I, Region 1 final in triple overtime to Mentor on Saturday, Ohio State might have reaped the benefits. The Cardinals eschewed an extra point in favor of a two-point conversion and knocked out the defending state champion Wildcats in a 57-56 thriller.

Watch List offensive tackle Jimmy Byrne took the defeat hard, but now will be able to make an unofficial visit to Ohio State on Saturday to see The Game against Michigan.

It will be the first time Byrne has been to an actual Buckeyes game -- he attended the spring game -- and will be only the second unofficial game day visit he’s made this season because the 6-foot-4, 275-pound junior usually plays on Saturday.

“I’m looking forward to seeing Ohio State, to seeing their offensive line and to seeing how their game day works,” Byrne said. “It’s kind of the same thing I did when I went to Notre Dame. I’ll be looking more at my position than anything else.”

It will be the second time Byrne will see Michigan, as he saw Notre Dame play host to Michigan on Sept. 22. He left in a state of awe at just how incredible the experience was.

With Notre Dame and Ohio State in his final two, Byrne wants to make a decision before the summer. But he’s not coming into Saturday’s game with an agenda.

“I’m not really sure what to expect,” Byrne said. “I just watched at the Notre Dame game. I’ll do the same thing at the Ohio State game.

“I’ll take in everything I can and see how it goes. I really don’t have a checklist for things I want to see.”
