RB Derrell Scott visits only one school

By Dave Hooker

A visit from Derrell Scott should only reinforce the Gamecocks' position as an early leader for his services. It once seemed shaky. Now, not so much.

After saying this summer that South Carolina was the school that impressed him the most, Scott named a top three last month. The Gamecocks were part of the trio. So were Ohio State and Florida State, which would make one wonder if the competition was creeping up on South Carolina.

Based on his visits this fall, that doesn't seem to be the case. The ESPN Watch List prospect made only one visit this fall and has no plans to make anymore. The one trip was to South Carolina for the Gamecocks' 35-7 win over Georgia in Columbia. Worth noting is that he's been to Columbia multiple times.

When asked about what stood out about the game, the tailback from Havelock (N.C.) High stated via Facebook message, "The atmosphere did."

Scott has said he likes the way Gamecock coaches utilize their tailbacks and that South Carolina's Marcus Lattimore is his favorite running back.

Lattimore suffered a season-ending knee injury, but his impact on the program might still be felt, especially if Scott ends up a Gamecock. Scott is being recruited to South Carolina by defensive line coach Brad Lawning and running backs coach Everette Sands.

Here's what Scott had to say last month about his other two finalists when he spoke to ESPN's NoleNation.com.

Florida State: “I just like the tradition they have there. I love how much speed they have and how fast they play.”

Ohio State: “I like how Urban Meyer uses his athletes on the field. I like how he gets all his best athletes on the field and how he’d use me.”

Neither the Seminoles nor Buckeyes should fret that the Gamecocks have an early lead. It's still more than 14 months until Scott will sign his national letter of intent.
