Dameon Willis Jr. delaying decision

By Brad Bournival

Dameon Willis (Cleveland/St. Ignatius) wanted to make his choice between Michigan and Michigan State after the two played each other Oct. 20 in a 12-10 win by the Wolverines.

It didn’t happen.

That's mainly because the 6-foot, 208-pound junior has refocused his thoughts on what is going on this season with his high school team. A 20-13 loss to St. Edward in Week 10 pushed the Wildcats into the second spot in Division I, Region 1, in the postseason and opened the eyes of the safety.

With interest from Louisville, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Pittsburgh, as well as the aforementioned universities, Willis is now all about St. Ignatius, which means a college decision will wait.

“I’m just riding the wave, trying to get these next four games for Coach [Chuck] Kyle and then we’ll start sending out the film,” he said.

Saturday’s 35-26 win over Austintown Fitch and Buckeyes commit Billy Price gave Kyle his 300th career victory and pushed the importance of Willis’ high school career to the forefront.

With four more wins, the defending state champion Wildcats can claim their 12th state title in school history -- if they can get through a gantlet of a schedule.

“This means everything,” Willis said. “I wish we could have gotten 300 for Coach last week, but [Saturday’s] win was special for me and special for him.

“The phrase 12 for 12 sounds so sweet. We just want to keep it going.”
