Ohio State impresses Mavety on visit

By Brad Bournival

Ohio State will have its work cut out for it with Chad Mavety (Garden City, N.J./Nassau Community College) when he returns to campus in November.

And that’s a good thing.

The 6-foot-6, 320-pound junior college standout visited Ohio State on Saturday and to say things went well would be an understatement.

“It was fun,” Mavety said. “I had a blast. The people I met were all cool. All the coaches were definitely great guys and the facilities were unbelievable.”

Meeting the coaches isn’t new to Mavety as he had already visited with offensive line coach Ed Warinner and talked to Urban Meyer during the recruiting process.

It was what Meyer said on Saturday that had Mavety excited. Along with touring the campus and getting a behind-the-scenes tour, he got a chance to talk to Meyer one-on-one.

“I had a blast,” Mavety said. “He told me, 'You’re our starter when you come in this spring.' But it was more than football. It was academics and life after football.”

The next step between Ohio State and Mavety is an official visit on Nov. 22 during a weekend when the Buckeyes play Indiana at home.

As for where things left with Mavety, it couldn’t be much better.

“They’re very high on my list,” he said. “I liked everything, to be honest. It was fun. It’s a good place to be.”

Mavety has an unofficial visit lined up to Tennessee next weekend and will travel to Syracuse the following week. After that, visits to Alabama, Florida State, Miami (Fla.) and Rutgers are in the works.

Last season, Mavety was a third-team All-Northeast Football Conference selection and was part of an offensive line that helped Nassau Community College rank sixth in the nation in rushing, while going 9-2.

Mavety is on track to graduate in December.
