Ohio State legacy receives big offer
By Brad Bournival
Derek Barnett (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood Academy) might already know what it’s like to play for Ohio State.
The 6-foot-3, 269-pound defensive end can’t help himself because he received an earful from his grandfather Gerald Kasunic growing up. See, Kasunic played for the Buckeyes in the early 1960s so the scarlet and gray has always been a topic of discussion in the Barnett household.
A fan of the Buckeyes, Barnett has heard the stories. Just how many, he’s not sure.
So when Ohio State called with an offer on Wednesday, it took him back a bit.
“It means a lot to me,” Barnett said. “I’m really excited. They enter the mix. Tennessee and Vanderbilt were my first SEC offers.
“They’ve been recruiting me a long time, but Ohio State they’re up there, too. Every offer means the same to me, but I’m really happy about this one.”
The Buckeyes are up there so much that Barnett has already scheduled a visit and will be on campus June 22 to talk shop.
While he’s there to see the campus and take a look inside The Horseshoe, Barnett will come direct to Urban Meyer and the coaching staff.
“I want to talk football with them and ask them how they’re going to use me,” he said. “I want to see what they’ll say.
Along with Tennessee and Vanderbilt, he has offers from Duke, Florida State, LSU, Middle Tennessee, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, South Florida and Texas A&M after a junior season where he made 52 tackles -- 14 for loss -- and registered six sacks.
