Ohio State outlook: Top 5 2014 QBs

By Brad Bournival

As the 2014 recruiting class comes into focus following what was yet another strong national signing day for Urban Meyer, BuckeyeNation will take a position-by-position look at the juniors.

Today, we examine the quarterbacks. Ohio State took its time in offering the position in regards to the Class of 2014, but has since offered three in the last week.

Here are the top five junior quarterbacks not committed somewhere else. Three have an offer from the Buckeyes. Two have the interest of the scarlet and gray.

1. Kyle Allen (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain)

Offers: Arizona, Arizona State, Boise State, California, Colorado State, Duke, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, UCLA, West Virginia

Outlook: The 6-foot-2, 192-pound ESPN 150 senior did himself a huge service in winning not only the Elite 11 regional in Chicago, but earning a ticket to The Opening. He’s a pocket passer, which would be a change for the Buckeyes. Meyer is willing to make that change for Allen.

Zack Darlington
Recently offered quarterback Zack Darlington plans to visit Ohio State in June.
2. Brandon Harris (Bossier City, La./Parkway)

Offers: Alabama, Arizona State, Arkansas, Auburn, Houston, Indiana, Louisiana Tech, McNeese State, Mississippi State, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Texas A&M

Outlook: The 6-2, 186-pound Harris was out-of-his-mind excited about his offer from Ohio State, but since then Alabama has put a wrench in the monkey works with one as well. Harris has said he plans on making his commitment in July. He also wants to visit the Buckeyes. The sooner they can get him on campus, the better.

3. Zack Darlington (Apopka, Fla./Apopka)

Offers: Arizona, Boston College, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Carolina Sate, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Southern Miss, Virginia Tech, West Virginia

Outlook: The 6-1, 201-pound Darlington wowed Ohio State offensive coordinate Tom Herman right away and picked up an offer the next day last week. He’s got 4.43 40-yard dash speed and an arm to boot. His coach and father, Rich Darlington, indicated that Zack plans on making a visit to Ohio State in the middle of June.

4. DeShone Kizer (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic)

Offers: Alabama, Arkansas, Boston College, Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisville, LSU, Michigan State, Nebraska, North Carolina, Northwestern, Penn State, Purdue, Rutgers, Syracuse, Tennessee, Toledo

Outlook: The 6-5, 208-pound Kizer might be the next on the list for the Buckeyes if they miss on the aforementioned top three. He’s got a live arm and winner’s attitude. He’s planning on visiting Ohio State this summer.

5. Drew Barker (Conner, Ky./Hebron)

Offers: Cincinnati, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisville, Miami (Fla.), Mississippi State, North Carolina, Ole Miss, Purdue, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Western Kentucky

Outlook: The 6-4, 205-pound ESPN 150 Barker has flirted with Ohio State for months. He's going to announce his commitment Friday. It won’t be with the Buckeyes.
