Four-star OL Nelson names a No. 1

By Jared Shanker

The order of the top group for four-star Quenton Nelson (Red Bank, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) open to interpretation.

The 6-foot-5, 285-pound offensive lineman listed a top five of Notre Dame, Boston College, Ohio State, Rutgers and Penn State. And is that in order?

“Sort of,” Nelson said.

Notre Dame was the first team Nelson mentioned, and he admits the Fighting Irish are his No. 1 school.

“Coach [Harry] Hiestand is a really great coach, and I liked his coaching style a lot,” said Nelson, who visited Notre Dame in April. “I stayed the night with Steve Elmer, really nice kid, and all the offensive linemen are nice and cool. I like the campus -- it’s small and beautiful. And the academics there, it’s the No. 1 business school, which is what I want to major in.”

The stiffest competition facing the Irish could be Ohio State. The Buckeyes were after Nelson early -- Notre Dame offered on his visit -- and offensive line coach Ed Warinner is leading Nelson’s recruitment.

“Coach [Urban] Meyer’s won everywhere he’s been, and he had a great year last year even though they had sanctions and he didn’t know the players,” Nelson said. “He put together a really good coaching staff.”

Nelson’s most recent visit was to Penn State for the spring game, and he likes the approach of second-year coach Bill O’Brien.

“Coach O’Brien, he’s a no-BS guy. He’s straight up with me all the time,” he said. “Coach Mac [McWhorter], he’s been in college football forever, not to make him sound old. He has so much experience, and that’s great for [an offensive line] coach.”

Nelson is not sure when he'll make a decision, but he said one could come soon.
