Recruiting mailbag: The next big thing

By Brad Bournival

It’s time to dip into the BuckeyeNation recruiting mailbag and answer some of your questions.

We’ll try to give everyone a chance to get their questions answered.

We encourage you to send your questions by Twitter at @bbournival, by e-mail at brad.bournival.espn@gmail.com or by posting a question in the Horseshoe Pit forum.

@adamwilliams84: Who is the highest-rated prospect that Ohio State has a legitimate shot at landing?

BuckeyeNation: If I had to hedge a bet right now, it would be Raekwon McMillan. The 6-foot-2, 249-pound junior is not only the highest-rated inside linebacker, he’s the highest-rated overall linebacker and is No. 15 overall in the class of 2014. If you’re a statistics hound like me, McMillan registered 151 tackles last season and had seven sacks to go along with one interception.

Kitt Demarre
Demarre Kitt loved his visit to Ohio State and the Buckeyes have a very good chance of landing him.
@Timmer3Craft: What do you think the chances are we get Deshaun Watson and Demarre Kitt?

BN: Let’s start with Kitt first. After his Ohio State visit, the ESPN 150 wide receiver said he saw everything he needed to see and has the Buckeyes high on the list. As of today, I expect him to commit to Ohio State. That could go a long way in helping with Watson’s chances. The ESPN 150 quarterback said he’d take an official visit to Ohio State. That’s the key, getting him on campus. In the end, my gut says Watson stays with Clemson.

@SUGARDADDYSTANK: It’s said Ohio State will only have 14 or so scholarships for 2014. The Buckeyes already have seven, so what needs are they going to fill and will there be a quarterback?

BN: The need is at offensive line. With two already in the mix in Marcelys Jones and Kyle Trout, the Buckeyes will take two, maybe three more. The fact they lose four to graduation after this season shows that. The other need -- though Ohio State has taken two already -- is at linebacker, where they’ll look at some very big names such as McMillan, Dante Booker and Clifton Garrett, as well as others. As for the quarterback situation, yes, I think the Buckeyes take one. Darius Wade said it best after his visit when he stated that Urban Meyer is “trying to figure out who he can give the keys to the Lamborghini to. He doesn’t want to take a chance and give it to the wrong person.”

Expect this to be a slow process.

jbacevice@gmail.com: Do you think Garrett is out of the picture at OSU now?

BN: I do not. That said there’s work to be done with all the SEC interest he’s received. Here’s a direct quote from him regarding recent activity and Ohio State: “They picked up two linebackers in the 2014 class and signed two more in the 2013 class. They’re starting to fill up at linebacker, but I already know what Ohio State has to offer. My focus is shifting to [visiting] the SEC and getting out to USC and UCLA.”

Sam Hubbard might not be a linebacker at the next level and if so, the Buckeyes should tell the ESPN 150 linebacker that. I still think Garrett is in the picture, but it might take a few conversations to calm some nerves.
